Del Toro Wants LOTR Cast for Hobbit Movie

In a very smart move (and one guaranteed to rally the fanboys around him from the get-go) Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro has indicated that he doesn't want to recast any characters which have already appeared in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, reffering to the original casting as 'perfect'.
The only characters which I can think of that recur are Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Gollum (Andy Serkis), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), and obviously Bilbo (Ian Holm)... but I only read the comic-book version, so I'm probably missing some.
UPDATE (30/4):
McKellen has signed on, apparently.
And the Song of the Day Is...

... the excellent Pocketknife remix of Joanna Newsom's Book of Right On.
Click for mp3
Pocketknife is one half of an kickass underground duo (the other half being Cousin Cole) who are responsible for 'Tambourine Dream', an album of understated indie folk remixes. An interesting idea which has come off pretty well, it also features remixes of tracks by Beirut, Iron & Wine, Nick Drake & Neil Young.
Check it out here.
More Scarlett Does Waits

So we're gradually getting more and more on this Scarlett Johansson covers Tom Waits album, and track two comes with a video. And David Bowie.
It's Scarlett's version of Falling Down, which first appeared on Big Time, Waits' live album. To be honest, I was more impressed by Anywhere I Lay My Head, but you can decide for yourself. Here's the video and mp3:

5 Second Review: Islands- Arm's Way

Excellently esoteric Canucks return with their sophomore effort- but will it please as much as 2006's Top 10-reaching 'Return To The Sea'?
Pros:
- When they want to, they can still make seemingly off-kilter numbers into major crowd pleasers. For example....
- Creeper is weird, but great. Particularly the middle section.
- There's a strange funky, Stevie Wonder thing going on in some parts. And a strange pirate-y feel with some of the tenor-sax. Which is good. (I don't really know what I mean by pirate-y, that's just what I hear. Am I crazy? Maybe...).
- Nick Diamonds still knows how to write a pop song, which is commendable.
- The epic madness of Vertigo is really excellent.
- Kudos has to be given to the character of the whole thing.
Cons:
- The strings are pretty consistently poor. The two violin players seem to be content with (and at times quite excited about) playing the most bloody obvious thing they could possibly play. Opening track The Arm is a particular offender. The song's hook is on strings, and is so clichéd it makes me want to immediately skip the track.
- It appears that Diamonds has pushed his quest for choruses too far, with some songs being ruined by the presence of a segment whose only purpose is repetition (Pieces of You). And it sticks out like a sore thumb.
- Much as it's a shitty thing to compare new albums to old, this album really suffers from the lack of a Where There's a Will There's a Whalebone or a Rough Gem.
- Filler filler filler filler. There's quite a bit.
Not quite a great follow up. In fact, I can't help but be disappointed. It appears that maybe the band's focus as a unit may have lost some of the crazy eclecticism that made their previous album such a delight. There's still whispers of greatness though, so hopefully the kinks will be ironed out for album three.

New Dark Knight Trailer

So here's your first view of the new trailer courtesy of the folks at Trailer Addict (a proper high-definition version is to be released on Sunday):

4.

KAWABATA MAKOTO solo
Kawabata Makoto is best known for his speed-demon noise-fuzz guitar in Acid Mothers Temple, but he is also widely active as an unparalleled drone guitarist. Drawing upon a huge reservoir of original techniques including metal glissando and bow-work that can summon up the sound of a string ensemble or orchestra, his work in this area cannot be simply categorized as minimal, drone or experimental. You'll find it hard to believe that a single guitar can create sonic worlds of such meditative and elegant depth.
RUINS ALONE (Yoshida Tatsuya solo)
Yoshida is one of the most innovative drummer/composer/improviser in Japan's new music scene. pioneer of Drum & Bass duo RUINS was founded by Yoshida in '85 . Tunes are complicated and mysterious, and songs are sung in the language of their own invention. It's high-tension, wild, heavy, speedy, acute, and powerful tremendous ensemble never sounds like they are only two players. now RUINS had no bassist and currently he has been playing as RUINS ALONE. playing RUINS songs with sampling bass.
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida)
Acid Mothers Temple have rapidly become acclaimed as the greatest, most extreme trip psychedelic group in the world. Releases have appeared on labels around the world at an amazing pace, and the magnificence of their live performances is already being whispered of as legendary. SWR is the AMT Family's most powerful battle-formation yet. featuring Kawabata and Yoshida from Ruins. their crushingly acute freakout sound will pulverize the world's legions of wannabe psych groups.

STEVEN POWERS a.k.a. ESPO DOES DUBLIN

more pics in the read more and a little info on espo too

ESPO (Stephen J. Powers) is a New York City graffiti artist. His name is an acronym for "Exterior Surface Painting Outreach."Powers is from Philadelphia's Overbrook neighborhood; he graduated from Robert E. Lamberton High School in 1987 and took classes at the University of the Arts. He moved to New York in 1995. He painted on storefront grates in Fort Greene, Bedford-Stuyvesant, TriBeCa and the South Bronx, covering the entire grate with white or silver paint and writing his name over it.Powers painted in daylight, wearing street clothes; he told the New York Times in 1999 that when passerby asked what he was doing he would tell them, "I'm with Exterior Surface Painting Outreach, and I'm cleaning up this gate"; the official-sounding name was enough to ward most people off. Powers targeted shops that appeared to be out of business and grates that were already heavily vandalized, describing his graffiti as a public service. In 1999 he said that he had painted around 70 grates. In December 1999 Powers was arrested for vandalism while he was in the midst of organizing a protest against Rudolph Giuliani; he charged that the arrest was politically motivated. A New York Times editorial criticized the Giuliani administration for its secrecy in the case (while dismissing Powers as "a noodge and self-promoter, one of those deliberately annoying characters whom most of us could do without"). He stated in 2000 that he had given up graffiti; his studio art has sold for as much as $20,000. He is the author of a book on graffiti's history, "The Art of Getting Over," published by St. Martin's Press in 1999. He has also designed clothing for Marc Ecko, Nike, and Calvin Klein. He is living and working in Dublin on a Fulbright Scholarship.
New CSS song

The new song by Cansei de Ser Sexy has been made available on their website today.
Rat Is Dead (Rage) is the first single from Donkey, the second album from Brazilian band Cansei De Ser Sexy. It will be released on July, 2008.
The song has a kinda harder feel to it then most on the last record but the dance ability is still there strong, so is a catchy chorus
enjoy

The Presidents of the United States of America rock Tripod
For all of you who dismissed The Presidents of the United States of America back in 1996 as joke band, then...good for you. However hopefully you'll have taken the correct stance of laughing WITH them and not AT them. The Presidents know exactly how silly they are and they revel in being as silly as possible and doing it all for the benefit of us.
From the get go its clearly obvious that The Presidents are going to have as much fun as possible regardless of what the crowd thinks. Luckily the crowd is seriously down for that and pogo's along to even the slower songs (few and far between). At one point a couple come onstage and the guy proposes to the girl. Does she accept? What kind of bitch would she be if she didn't. Normally this would come across as cheesy and shit but in the Presidents world its all part of the fun.
Musicwise naturally they crack out all the hits. 'Kitty', 'Dune Buggy' and 'Lump' are launched in the main part of the set while 'Peaches' and 'Kick out the Jams' finish it off. Encoring with 'Video Killed the Radio Star', 'Candy' and 'We're not gonna make it' they actually manage to restore me to life after one of the worst hangovers of recent memories.
Click after the jump to see a reminder of how awesome they were and are
5 Second Review: The Jimmy Cake, Spectre and Crown
6 uears after their last full album 'Dublin gone, Everybody dead', The Jimmy Cake finally return after numerous line-up changes.
Pros:
- The Jimmy Cake are awesome. I've always thought so and I always will.
- The Jimmy Cake live are an awesome proposition.
- The epic scope of this album is a pay off to what they've been buildling up to for years.
- The addition of Who-like Synths on tracks like 'Hugs for Buddy' add a new flavour.
- The chaotic mish-mash of instruments that normally infuse their tracks isn't as much in evidence on this album as it was on the last which could piss off a few people who loved them for that very reason.
- At first few listens it doesn't appear to be as amazing as 'Dublin Gone, Everybody Dead'.
- Thats pretty much it for the cons.

The Joker's internet hub whysoserious.com has been updated with details of a worldwide 'treasure hunt' to take place tomorrow night (Monday).
The closest to us is London, so I certainly won't be making it along, but for those who do, I'm sure some surprises will be in store. To coincide with this latest stunt, the theatrical poster for the film was released on the site (that's it above- click for cool hi-res).

Gather with 300 of your closest friends at this exact spot on April 28th.
You'll need to be in contact with a partner-in-crime who has online access to relay your instructions once you're there. These instructions will give you the TRAIL to follow, but be sure to look both ways when crossing the street; we wouldn't want you to make an unscheduled visit to the ER now, would we?
Put on a smile and plan to spend about an hour or so bonding with your fellow clowns.

Metallica = Hyprocritical fucks

So after all that bullshit that Lars "shitface" Ulrich stirred up over downloading Metallica's music for free he has now turned around and said that "We're looking at how we can embrace everything, We want to be as free players as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor [of Nine Inch Nails] and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the internet."

Guillermo Del Toro To Direct The Hobbit

Pan's Labyrinth & Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro has finally signed on to direct Tolkien's The Hobbit.
This bodes well for the adaptation, which is already set to be guided by Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh in executive producer roles. The book will be split into two movies, both helmed by Del Toro, and shot in New Zealand with the Weta effects team behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Don't hold your breath though, the preliminarily release dates aren't til late 2011 & 2012.

5 Second Review: Slash's Autobiography

Slash spills all about Guns, Roses and how much of a prick Axl Rose is.
Pros:
- The inside scoop from one of the key members of one of the most debauched bands there ever was.
- Easy-going tone that gives you the feel of having a conversation with the man
- Juicy gossip about the break up of one of the biggest rock bands in the world
- Sex, sex, sex, drugs, drugs, drugs. Always interesting to read about other people's hell
Cons:
- Sometimes he leans too much on the "thats just my opinion" cop-out when bitching about Axl
- One gets the feeling that there's more stories of women and drugs that are being swept under the rug
- Written before the Velvet Revolver seperation so its fairly lacking on the bitching for that particular corner of his life
- As is typical with most rock biographies, unless you're playing the music while you're reading, then being told about the making of the music isn't as interesting as the stuff that inspired it.
McDonalds Co-Opts DEVO's Energy Dome

Devo recently discovered that they has once again unwittingly intersected with mainstream pop culture.
McDonald's fast food restaurants are offering a series of American Idol TV show themed toys in their children's Happy Meals. One of the toys is named "New Wave Nigel", who sports an orange jumpsuit, punk shades, and an unmistakable DEVO Energy Dome. Flipping a switch plays a DEVO-esque song (which sounds a bit like a mutated version of DEVO's Doctor Detroit.)
Was DEVO ever contacted by McDonald's, American Idol, or anyone else involved in making and distributing this toy wearing their trademark headgear? Of course not.

egoeccentric's Idiots Guide To The Lisbon Treaty
One of our sporadic politics posts, and probably the heaviest one yet, but I reckon this is fairly relevant. Bear with me...
I've been pondering this one for some time. It's really important that we understand the Lisbon Treaty before we go to vote on it in June, but it's an awkward bugger to understand.
I've tried to trawl through all the material on the subject (which is a bloody lot) in order to try to give it a summing up that you wouldn't need a degree in politics to understand.
As is the way with these things, they're tough to write without bias. I've tried to do so, but all the same a healthy skepticism is urged.
Just so you know where I stand, I started neutral but I'm now swinging towards Yes. I'm not a fan of any particular party so I have no agenda. Questions are welcomed, and I encourage anyone interested to check out information for yourself (RTE have a good section on it here).
Ok, so lets get started...
Background
The EU is essentially held together by a series of treaties between countries on various issues. As time goes by we have to update of these treaties to make them relevant & more effective. So the Lisbon Treaty is basically taking existing treaties (Masstricht, Rome etc) and crossing out some things, rephrasing others and inserting some new bits.
The point is to streamline the EU and make it 'more efficient' or 'better equipped to deal with challenges'.
At the moment we're working under a system designed for 17 states, but in fact there are 27 states involved. So the system needs to be updated in some way.
The initial plan was to do up a European Constitution, which was drawn up... but rejected by France & the Netherlands in 2005. It's rejection was more than likely due to campaigning by groups that were protective of the countries' individual sovereignty, and anti-globalisation movements.
Following this rejection, work was started on re-drafting the Constitution into a more acceptable form... the Lisbon Treaty.
So what's it all about?
The treaty has several functions. It's effectively summing up all the other treaties and making them all neat and tidy. The idea is to establish exactly the purposes of the EU, its aims, and how it functions.
And yes, there are some changes.
For example:
What the hell does all that mean?
Ok, lets looks at these main points:
1. The way in which decisions are generally made will be changed.
You'll have to excuse the jargon on this one. Qualified Majority Voting (QMV) will become the main way decisions are made (when opinions aren't unanimous).
This method is designed to fairly represent based on population, but at the same time allow for fears of smaller countries that they might be bullied by the bigger states. There's lots of provisions to ensure that this doesn't happen, like if four member states are against a contested proposal, no matter how big or small those states are- the proposal is shot down. This way smaller states aren't at risk of losing their voice.
How QMV is worked out is a very maths-y process, which isn't my strong point, so you can read about it here. All in all the process gets more democratic, and more representative of reality, ie all states have a say, not just the big uns, or the ones who were in first.
2. The EU will be made into a solid legal entity.
This seems to be an economic provision more than anything. The EU will be more effective on the World stage if it's recognised as a legal entity in itself, ie- it will be able to perform better in World markets.
3. The sizes of the commission, and the parliament will be restricted.
The European Comission will be reduced in size from 27 Commissioners to just 18.
This is done purely with efficiancy in mind. It was decided that there wasn't enough tasks to warrant 27 Commissioners, so a Commission of 18 will be more effective than 27, ie- decisions will be easier and faster made. Who sits on the commission will be allocated on a rotational basis, so at any given time there will be 9 countries without a Commissioner.
The amount of MEP's in Parliament will be capped at 751, for pretty much the same reason- you can't get things done with thousands of Ministers all vying for attention. The seats will be allocated proportionately based on population.
4. National parliaments will be given a greater roll.
For the first time, EU proposals will have to be run by National Parliaments before they're approved. The individual parliaments will be able to give their views on proposals well before they're passed, and if enough parliaments are opposed to the change it'll be amended or withdrawn. This gives us a bit more control of things, and eases some fears of the whole 'random bureaucrats in Brussels' thing.
5. Introduction of 'Citizen's Initiative'.
Another step in the same direction- for the first time regular citizens will be able to propose European legislation by producing a petition with a million EU signatures (which sounds a lot, but isn't really).
6. The Charter on Fundamental Human Rights becomes legal.
The Charter on Fundamental Human Rights does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a great document which sets out standards of human rights. Right now it has no legal standing, merely a guideline, but Lisbon makes it legal. This means it can stand up in court. So if you reckon your human rights are being breached in some way, you can go to an Irish court on the basis that it breaches this EU charter.
Our own Irish constitution is particularly kickass on human rights anyway, so we pretty much already have the benefits that this provides, but that's not the case for all 27 countries in the union.
Things you've probably heard or are wondering about:
There is a thing in the treaty called the 'Solidarity Clause', which says that member states are compelled to help another member state if it falls victim to a natural disastour, terrorist attack, etc. BUT... the treaty explicitly states that individual countries foreign policies are respected. Which means that Ireland's neutrality will be preserved. So there's no risk of anyone being conscripted into a super-european army.
Yes. For the first time the environment is focused on. The treaty adds to the aims of the EU the intention to preserve the environment, and recognises the threat of climate change. By adding this to the unions aims, it allows Europe to actually do something about the issue.
Yes and no, but mostly no. First off, it's not just Ireland who'll lose a commissioner, every country will, so we're not being picked on- it's just fairer that way. Secondly, and more important- the nature of the commission is that commissioners are not representatives for their own country, but all countries in the union. On entering their post they have to swear an oath saying they'll be motivated only for the good of the union, not the country of their nationality. So even if Ireland had a commissioner in 24/7, it wouldn't mean more of a voice for Ireland.
I reckon I've covered most aspects of the treaty here, at least the ones that seem to be most controversial, but it's totally worth having a look into it yourself.
If anyone has any other element which the want cleared up, or any questions on it, ask away via comment or email and I'll do my best to answer.
The most important thing is to actually get out and vote, be it yes or no, as this will affect all of us in some way or another (this means you, Bob, you buffoon). Do it!

David O. Russell Does It Again

Director David O. Russell makes good movies. He's responsible for Three Kings, and the excellent I (heart) Huckabees. He's also got a bit of a reputation for being a tad difficult to work with.
Huckabees was famously marred by outtakes leaked online with Russell, Lily Tomlin & Dustin Hoffman all at each others throats (see read more). It now appears something similar has happened on the set of O. Russell's new film, 'Nailed'.
James Caan (pictured above, amid mature discussion with O. Russell) has quit the flick after a reported on-set bust up with the director, apparently sparked by Russell's demanding that Caan both choke and cough at the same time for a particular scene. Hmm... I wonder how long it'll be before O'Russell 'never works in this town again'.
Read on for amusing footage of the Huckabees rows.

Conor Oberst's Solo Spot Explained

Being a big Bright Eyes fan, an eyebrow was raised at seeing Conor Oberst on the Electric Picnic bill. Bright Eyes is essentially 'The Conor Oberst Show', so a solo spot seemed odd. I was expecting a one-man-and-a-guitar kinda thing, but that is apparently not the case.
Oberst has in fact recorded a solo album, backed up in a Bright Eyes fashion by a group of his mates (including M. Ward & Rilo Kiley's Jason Boesel) who are being called the 'Mystic Valley Band'. It's this setup that Picnic goers will be seeing.
The album, which I can only assume that it's to be titled Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band, was recorded in Mexico, and produced by Oberst with help from Now It's Overhead's Andy LeMaster. It's due to released on August 4th.
It seems a lot of their tracks are available to check out on youtube (click), but for mp3 tasters and a full album tracklisting check out the read more...

music I can't get out of my head

This weeks music I can't get out of my head is the entire album White Wonder by Crayonsmith. Having seen the guys play live many a time I thought I knew what to expect from the album, I was pleasantly surprised when I put the cd on to find that it was far far better then I expected. It's a joy to listen to and is a very well crafted piece of music. The production on the songs is amazing and I really can't fault the albums at all.
I urge you to go and buy it and listen and see what I mean.

Dark Knight Viral Campaign

The viral advertising campaign for the new Batman movie has probably been the most elaborate and involved campaign of its sort so far. I've been following it vaguely for a bit, and it's gotten to the stage it just has to be written about. Because it rocks. A lot.
As if people aren't already hyped up about the new movie (which is released on the 25th of July), the ingenious folks over at Warner Brothers have been teasing fanboys with an elaborate network of websites for months now. For a full list, and an idea of how insanely meticulous this whole thing is- keep reading.
Here's a complete list of all known viral sites so far- some are more elaborate than others, and most have clues or links that have directed people to other viral sites. As far as I can tell, all email addresses and phone numbers quoted are legitimate. Give em a shot and see what happens....

The websites are pretty cool as is, but the best thing about this viral campaign is that it's spilled out into reality too.
For example, when people who submitted photos of themselves in Joker make-up to the Joker himself via Rory's Death Kiss were rewarded with 25 copies of The Gotham Times in the post (pics here).
On December 3rd, a list of locations showed up on whysoserious.com with instructions to show up and identify yourself as 'Robin Banks'. The locations were all bakeries, and the first to show up at each one was given a cake with 'Call Me Now!' and a phone number written on it (see pics below). Inside the cakes were Gotham P.D. evidence bags containing a note, a mobile phone with charger & a joker playing card. Calling the number got you through to Rent-a-clown, and a message told callers to await further instructions.

On April Fools day, clowntravelagency.com was updated with a similar list of locations. This time the first to get there got a case containing a phone, charger, playing card, note and bizarrely, a bowling ball.
The sites and the clues keep popping up- the latest being the message from the Joker pictured below. Follow his instructions and check it out.
If this isn't the single greatest work of advertising genius of all time, then I shall find a hat and eat it. Lets just hope the movie lives up to all this hype...
