Better than Prince

For all the people who are still pissed off with Prince , i present this guy (Flairs) hes better then prince.

the video was made by JONAS & FRANCOIS they also made the video for "D.A.N.C.E" by JUSTICE.
Handmade, 3000 paper sheets, a simple printer-computer & scanner trio, 7 black ink pencils, sometimes drawn in a Tokyo Hotel room, a Paris studio or on a Madonna video shoot in London, it's black & white simplicity suits the track like the best wedding possible....

The Indiecater Vol. 1

The shining beacon of indie light that is mp3hugger has just one-upped itself by compiling and releasing a compilation of underground music that's just too damned good to remain underground.

Featuring excellent (and all exclusive) material by Beaten Awake, The E.L.F. and Michael Knight, the compilation entitled The Indiecater is available now online for the ridiculously good price of €4.50. Click here to buy (I highly recommend doing so, and imagine that many of these acts will not be 'indie' for long).

Personal favorites of mine are the tracks by Slushco & Foreign Slippers, the former being an upbeat, summery, piano-led gem; the latter a sublimely stated folk number. Rest assured both artists will be investigated further.

As an Indiecater taster, here's the fantastic symphonic post-rock of New York's Cymbals Eat Guitars:

CSS: Donkey Preview

CSS's second album Donkey (cover above) is released on July 21st, and already word is starting to filter out that it's something to look forward to. Having got a taste of a few new tracks at their recent show in the Academy, I know to expect more of a pop-rock sound than an electro-rock one.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Hmm... possibly too early to tell. But what we can do is take a look at what's available online already and see how that sits.

Do read on...

Single number one you've probably already heard, Rat is Dead (Rage). It's a fairly decent little pop song, but lacks the bite of anything off CSS's debut album.

Following that is a step in the right direction- Left Behind is kinda funky, and definitely more of a party song (which, let's face it, is the band's forté). The only criticism I'd make is that it sounds a bit too busy, bordering on cluttered. But judge for yourself:

CSS- Left Behind
File removed by request

There's a few 'sampler' mp3s floating about online, where you can get the gist of the song through about a minute and a half of it (which then repeats, rather annoyingly). Hear's two of em to whet your appetite:

Things seems to get a bit electro with Believe Achieve:

CSS- Believe Achieve (Sampler)
File removed by request

The whole mostly-rock-but-with-a-dash-of-electro thing mightn't be so bad an idea, as evidenced by this humdinger, How I Became Paranoid:

CSS- How I Became Paranoid (Sampler)
File removed by request

So the bottom line seems to be to not expect a repeat of CSS's debut album- expect something different, interesting, and possibly very good.

Oh, and even though the album's not out for a month, the remix-monkeys have already been hard at work. Here's Aussie rising stars Midnight Juggernauts treating us to a remix of Left Behind:

Save The Late License

Our delightful and clearly quite competent Government prefers dancing to the Walls of Limerick rather than 50 Cent, so is proposing to introduce a 2008 Liquor Licensing Bill which will tinker with the closing times of pubs & clubs.

If the bill is passed, clubs all over the country (theatre license or not) will close at 2.30AM six nights a week, and at 1AM on Sundays. The nightclub industry (probably with due cause) gets a lot of stick over the amount of public order offenses that occur in the wee hours. In an effort to tackle this, industry heads have long been pushing for sequenced closing hours, where pub closings and nightclubs are staggered over the night to avoid one massive spill of drunkards at the same time. Apparently a vast amount of research has attested to the sensibility of such a plan, but God knows what this research is & who conducted it (probably the nightclub industry themselves). So I can't vouch for the research, but the idea does make sense to me.

So I have signed a petition the nightclub folk have set up to try garner support for their proposals, or, more accurately, to try to shoot down the new licensing bill. Aside from the politics/social implications of the whole thing, late bars are fun. I like the fact that you can respectfully disagree with regular pubs deciding 2.30 should be your bed-time, and head over to the Gaiety for a reggae band and some tequila.

If you happen to agree, you can head over here to sign the petition. C'mon, save the boozing!

5 Second Review: Incredible Hulk

Marvel Studios release their second self-produced flick and try to banish memories of Ang Lee's 'no-action Hulk'.

Pros:

  • There's certainly no shortage of action this time round. Even when Ed Norton is in non-hulk form, he's constantly being chased by trigger-happy army types.
  • The CGI is quite good. I've heard complaints about it not looking realistic, but honestly- it's a 15 foot green monster. I reckon that probably The most important thing is that the CGI elements interact well with the real ones.
  • Tim Roth does the usual snarling villain thing, and the film is all the better for it.
  • Lots of explosions. Which is nice.
  • No prolonged exposition or dialogue-heavy scenes, which don't really fit in this kinda movie (cough, Ang Lee, cough). Less introspection, more smashing things.
  • Nice hints of things to come (not gonna get into spoilers).
  • Lou Ferrigno (original TV Hulk) makes an appearance. And he still looks like a brick shithouse. Fanboys= happy.
Cons:

  • Lots of silliness. Mostly of the typical 'Don't do that, you fool!' variety, where characters who should really know better persist in doing stupid things.
  • In fact, the vast majority of characters in this movie are complete and utter morons.
  • A tad too self-referential. How many in-jokes do we need?
  • I know it's the point of the whole thing, but I can't help but wince at lines like "Hulk Smash!".
  • Goof city. A couple of sloppy, lazy filmmaking errors are noticeable. Expect fanboys picking over them for years.
Harbour no delusions about Hulk (it's no Citizen Kane), this is a popcorn movie and you get what you pay for. It's short, self-aware, slightly kitch, and ultimately fun. More of the same, please, Marvel.

music I can't get out of my head

so more music i can't get out of my head this time it takes the form of London based Dinocore/ Disastercore/ Robotcore/ Tyrantcore 4 piece Down I go
The song in question is off their new record Tyrant which is about famous and not so famous tyrannical world leaders throughout history, including Pol Pot, George Bush, Josef Stalin, Ariel Sharon and many more, and it sounds like Henry VIII’s syphilitic ulcers bursting, Ivan the Terrible beating his pregnant daughter in law and causing her to miscarry, Turkmenbashi’s 12 metre high gold statue of himself rotating to face the sun, Israel growing at the expense of others, mass graves being filled with murdered Cambodians, Romanians queueing for bread.

more in the read more

the song is Nicolae Ceaucescu heres what wiki had to say about him.
Nicolae Ceauşescu (January 26, 1918–December 25, 1989) was the leader of Romania from 1965 until December 1989, when a revolution and coup removed him from power. The self-called revolutionaries' representatives held a two-hour trial and sentenced him to death for crimes against the state, genocide, and "undermining the national economy."The hasty trial has been criticized as a kangaroo court. His subsequent execution marked the final act of the Revolutions of 1989.

Now lets see what the Down i go lyrics say about him
Tear them down!
Demolish old buildings to make space for new buildings to fill with tiny comrades.
Have Children! More Children!
Ceaucescu has amassed an unaffordable loan to pay for all buildings and all of the oversized families.
Families are starving while the food is shipped out. The darkened shelves are empty and the house is getting colder.
Blackout!
The television says that nobody's going to starve, but supposed record harvests never make it to the hungry people who have HIV and orphans in the streets.
A smiling leader in denial flanked by secret police.

Steaming>Down I go - Nicolae Ceaucescu

so a video i guess of down i go is in other, since i posted an actaul music video of theirs last time i talked about them heres them playing live , its a song off this is Disastercore called Gigantic! Titanic! (can you guess what its about).

also Gene Simmon from KISS thinks Radiohead are killing the music business.
"The record industry is dead. It's six feet underground and unfortunately the fans have done this. They've decided to download and file share. There is no record industry around so we're going to wait until everybody settles down and becomes civilised. As soon as the record industry pops its head up we'll record new material."

he also thinks that Radioheads live show is boring to watch.
"I admire bands like Radiohead, but the idea of being that serious? Fuck that, get up on stage and blow shit up! Bands that stand by their microphones and strum their guitars are forgetting one important point - people are bringing their eyes, it's audio and visual. If you're not fulfilling the visual part, it's like watching a movie with your eyes closed.

"One of the biggest compliments we get is [people saying], 'I fucking hate their music but that's the best show I ever saw in my life'."

5 Second Review: Jape- Ritual

Dublin's finest delivers the long awaited album number three. Can it possibly live up to expectations?

Pros:

  • Whereas album #1 was testing the water, and album #2 was finding his/their feet, here we have a band that have finally settled on their sound.
  • And what a sound. Having given Dublin gig-goers many a mind-blowing show, Richie Egan & Co have translated their energy perfectly to record.
  • Songwriting is of a very high standard throughout, with lyrics you can think on, and choruses you can sing.
  • As for style, think acoustic-electric. A singer/songwriter with synths and a drum machine who really wants you to dance.
  • While (album #2) Monkeys in the Zoo... had a few humdingers, this one is packed to the brim. If you're hoping for hit-singles like Floating, you're in luck. A lot of luck.
  • I can now finally can listen to I Was a Man somewhere other than Jape's myspace page.
  • Even the quiet songs are amazing- At the Heart of all of this Strangeness is subtly beautiful, and Phil Lynott is an instant singalong classic.
  • But don't forget the dancey tracks- Replays, Apple in an Orchard: great; Strike Me Down: AMAZING.
  • In fact, that's pretty much what we're talking about here- an album that fluctuates between great and amazing.
Cons:
  • I could go for a few more tracks.
  • That's it.
Consider the hype lived up to- this is definitely one of the albums of the year. If you haven't already had the pleasure of seeing Jape live- grab yourself some Electric Picnic tickets, cause after hearing this album you're going to want to.

Listen:
Let's go for a quiet one...

Top 5 Voting Songs

Happy voting day! Let's celebrate by taking a look at the top five songs about voting.

(Don't worry, they're not as terrible as you think)

Click read more for the music.

5. Curtis Mayfield- Move On Up

Apart from the Mayfield's lyrics- urging aspiration and optimism, yet compromise ("Take nothing less than the second best")- this song has voting significance for those who've watched 'The Wire'. It provides the soundtrack to 'Cutty' Wise's election morning run in Season 4, and one of the pivotal moments in the series' political storyline. Classic use of music in TV- perfect for the scene, and really makes you think about the lyrics. You can watch the clip here.

4. Tokyo Police Club- Your English Is Good

It's a bitchin pop-song, and Dave Monks' lyrics shamelessly rip the piss out of Politicians half-assed attempts to act sincere. "You don't need a change- you're future's with us!" and the oh so subtle refrain of "Give us your vote if you know what's good for you". Deadly.

3. The Who- Won't Get Fooled Again

Pete Townshend seems a bit fed of up the same old sh
it, and 'Won't Get Fooled Again' is practically the ultimate anti-voting anthem. Apparently a British Labour government in the 70s got into power on the back of student riots demanding change. When Labour got in, they promptly forgot about all their promises and just did whatever the hell they wanted to do. Hmm, sounds familiar...
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" sums up Townshend's disillusionment with 'The System', and his coda is effectively him saying 'fuck this' and buggering off to live in a commune.

2. Stevie Wonder- You Haven't Done Nothing

Good ol' Stevie Wonder becomes the voice of the people, preaching about how much of a failure & general arsehole Richard Nixon was. And as we all know, back in the day Stevie found it nigh on impossible to do anything without being incredibly funky. The lesson is: if you can't vote, buy a clavinet and recruit a backing band- it's the next best thing.

1.Radiohead- Electioneering

One of my favourite Radiohead tracks, you can almost feel Thom Yorke spitting with disgust as he takes pops at every aspect of fake-smile politics. As always, his disgust is articulated to perfection: "Riot shields, voodoo economics, it's just business...".

Genius.

Best song about politics ever.

While A New England was enough of a classic to cement Bragg's reputation as a legend, it wasn't his only moment of genius by a long shot. Check out the readmore to see what I mean.

Top 5 "Impostor" Songs a.k.a. Songs I always thought were by a different artist

Ever heard a song that you've been familiar with for years and years or at least knew it well enough to hum along to but then you find out, "Holy Shit, I always thought somebody else did it". Well I have on a few occasions in my life and so I introduce my Top 5 "Holy shit so thats who does the song".

You might look at these and wonder how I ever got these confused but with some of them there is definitely reasoning in my brain thoughts for why I would have made the mistake.

Click in the read more for the list

5. Stuck in the Middle With you - Stealer's Wheel

Scottish band Stealers Wheel were one hit wonders in the early 70's with this track before breaking up after three albums in 1975. This song, which gained more popularity from its use in Reservoir Dogs, was their one big hit in 1973. Former member Gerry Rafferty is also famous for his huge hit "Baker Street". "Stuck in the middle...has a folksy rock and roll, acoustic led riff with a husky whiny voice that spouts rambling but oddly poetic lyrics, all reminiscent of a certain singer-songwriter

I Always Thought It Was...Bob Dylan

Well I mean its obvious really. Not to mention that Steven Wright even describes it as a "Dylan-esque slice of Bubble-gum Pop" in Reservoir Dogs.

4. Love My Way - The Psychedelic Furs

Around the 80's there were quite a number of bands who sounded not unlike the The Psychedlic furs mainly due to the fact that the music is quite wishy-washy, distinctly 80's electro and with croaky vocals not unlike a certain great white duke.

I always thought it was...David Bowie

Some people can't hear what I'm hearing in this or why I thought it was Bowie for so long but there's just something there. It might be because tonally it sounds quite like Bowie's "China Girl (or vice versa actually as "Love My Way" was out first"). I dunno. It just seems to make sense to me.

3. Candy Girl - New Edition

Featuring a young Bobby Brown before he married Whitney and became a coked out mess (probably), New Edition were one of the proto-type boy-bands in so far as they sold shit-load of records, had hoards of screaming fans and are remembered by few. Because they were very young, were all boys, were all black and not to mention their sound was deliberately designed as such they were hailed/reviled as the next level to a certain other all boy, all young, all black band. And thats where the confusion lay.

I Always Thought It Was...The Jackson 5

Its probably because I only ever heard it in TV and Movie soundtracks I never picked up on the Electro intro or the little kind-of-rap at the beginning. It might also be because it sounds a lot like "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5 but allegedly that was the point all along. Either way it caused me to go "Who the fuck are New Edition?" when I saw the video finally on some VH1 classics show.

2. Horse With No Name - America

Sounds so like the person I thought it was that America even addressed this fact in their anthology liner notes. There's no doubt whatsoever who it sounds like.

I Always Thought It Was...Neil Young

While the chorus is more Simon and Garfunkel than Neil Young the rest of the song from the rhythm to the vocals are reminiscent of Canada's finest export. While the song is quite catchy and is actually a classic in its own right (especially in comparison to the rest of the shite that "America" released), the lyrics are too banal for Young and are often ridiculed sometimes famously. Randy Newman said that "the song is about a kid who thinks he's taken acid" while the late comedian Richard Jeni said "You're in the desert. There's nothing to do. Why don't you name the freakin horse". The irony of this whole matter is that the song itself knocked Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" off the Number One spot in the US.

1. Layla - Derek and the Domino's

Waily guitars, screamy blues-rock vocals. People know either two versions of "Layla". The original recorded by this Super-group in 1971 and used to great effect by Martin Scorsese in Goodfellas or the slower, practically re-written version from the MTV Unplugged performance in the early 90's.

Download here

I Always Thought It Was...Eric Clapton

Well okay yeah this cheats a little bit because of course it was Eric Clapton but until a few years ago I had no idea about Derek and the Domino's and had no idea that Clapton had starred in yet another super-group. Still props to the man for the Unplugged performance practically doing a cover version of his own song.

*Incidentally if its unclear as to why Matt Damon's image is at the top of the post then I suggest you Watch The Talented Mr. Ripley and all should become clear.
