Although this site has been long since retired, it continues to sit here in cyberspace- going nowhere soon, merely gathering dust and the occasional crazy comment.

For as long as Blogger keeps it here unarchived, I figure it would be a good idea to leave some forwarding addresses. You know- in case of emergency.

Clockwork Noise Get Christmassy

Clockwork Noise are headlining The Twisted Pepper tonight, with support from BellaJane, and Biggles Flies Again, AKA Conor from The Gandhis (The Civilians are listed on the poster, but have unfortunately had to pull out).

With the season that's in it, Clockwork Noise have decided to go all festive, and record a Christmas song. The track, a cover of Elvis’ ‘Blue Christmas’, will be given away for free at the gig, along with a super-special-bonus track, all wrapped up and Christmas present-y. Yay.

Things kick off at 8PM, and tickets are €7- gig goers will also get free admission to the awesome Mr. Jones club night which is on afterwards in the Pepper.

Because it would be very 'bah-humbug' of us to deprive non-dublin folk of the chance to hear a christmas song, you can download it here. Go nuts!

yes you did read the title of the post right. Originally, GZA was featured over a remix of the song “Keyboard City” done by The Hood Internet. Now, Dan Deacon took that remix and dissected it into this an awesome blend of Vocoder / electro madness.
This collaboration was inspired by the idea of GZA and Dan Deacon working together and Salvador Santana a platform was set for more original material between the two in the future. GZA first caught wind of Dan Deacon earlier this fall and after a connection via their publicist, Dan ended up taking GZA and Salvador's remix and putting his own twist on it.

The band have very strict guidelines governing the recording and writing process of their work. The music was recorded live in one room with no overdubs or repair, only using edits to create arrangements. All tracks were written over a twelve-day session in SOA Studio’s, Bristol.

When all this 'lets remake classic horror flicks' lark started up, I pretty much avoided them- save for occasionally suggesting that the only one I'd actually watch would be 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. Things started promisingly, with the casting of Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger. Who? You'll know him as Rorschach, but he's amazing as child molester Ronnie McGorvey in 'Little Children' (what a shitty thing to get typecast as).

But, alas, all hope has been lost with the below trailer. To be fair, it was probably rather foolish to think that it would be any different from all the other shitty, lazy, money-grabbing remakes.

The movie is released in Ireland on May 7th 2010.

What do you get when you cross Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eric Roberts, Danny Trejo, UFC's Randy Couture and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin?

Clearly the answer is 'an 80s action fan's wet-dream', but it's also a new film written and directed by Sly himself: The Expendables.

The movie's been on the cards for some time, but the trailer has finally been released. It doesn't look amazing by any stretch of the imagination, but at the very least we can be guaranteed a few good one-liners, and maybe the odd decapitation.

Release dates are a while off yet, but the US won't see the film til the end of next summer, so I wouldn't hold your breath. In the meantime, here's the trailer:

In scrambling to to fill the huge financial void left by Michael Jackson's passing, concert promoters AEG sold hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage to Sony Pictures, who figured they could make a quick buck out of a cinema version. Said film is to be released on October 28th, and (bizarrely) run for two weeks only. To satisfy anticipated demand, tickets are going on sale a month early- on September 27th.

The songs on this EP where recorded by Phil Elverum in the Department of Safety in Anacortes, WA at the end of the summer of 2007. In between a ferocious table tennis tournament and a lot of lake swimming we got 11 songs recorded. The Songs available here are the ones I think work best. The idea I had was to have a really loose and raw feel to the songs and play with musicians who hadn’t heard the songs before (in a kind of John Wesley Harding style). Kevin Erickson played organ and some guitar, Adrian Orange played drums, Ruth Allison played bass and sang, Phil played drums, some piano and some guitar and Karl Blau popped in and did some harmonies. It’s taken a while for this to be released so I decided to give it away for free.

Now that the mud has dried and the portaloos are but a distant memory, here are a few personal highlights from the Electric Picnic. Like most people I missed as many acts as they saw, but the swampy ground did not lend itself to moving at any great speed! ...

Lykke Li took to the stage Friday evening like a demented Scandinavian Stevie Nicks. She captivated the Crawdaddy tent, whirling around in a swathe of black scarves and complementing tracks from her ‘Youth Novels’ album with numbers by Lil’ Wayne and Kings of Leon.

Rhode Island multi instrumentalists The Low Anthem impressed with their sepia-toned, intricate Americana on Saturday afternoon, lead singer Ben Knox Miller coming off like a wide eyed young James Taylor. They played a selection of songs from their album ‘Oh My God Charlie Darwin’ to a reverential hushed Cosby tent.

Whitest Boy Alive brought a massive grin to everyone’s face when they played a euphoric set Saturday evening in the Cosby tent. Lead singer and King-of-Convenience Erland Oye was clearly in his element, unleashing his jazzy-disco-funk side project, and some awesomely bad dancing. Throwing in a smattering of cover versions including Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’ and 90s dance classic ‘Show me Love’ by Robin S, we’ll forgive them for the few bars of U2 (shudder)...

Despite flagging a little in the middle, the nutty boys Madness did a solid job of headlining the main stage Saturday night, aided by an impressive backdrop spelling out their name in giant lit letters.

Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch pleased a bursting-at-the-seams electro arena, delivering songs from her album ‘Lungs’. The leggy redhead was clearly taken aback at the adulating crowd who roared along with every line.

Passion Pit played a stormer Sunday night. Lead singer Michael Angelakos has really evolved as a front man recently and bounded about the stage, name-checking Irish folk singer Mary O’Hara, the source of the sample on their massive tune ‘Sleepyhead’ and making a decent stab at pronouncing her original track ‘Oro mo bháidin’. Closing number ‘The Reeling’ nearly lifted the roof clean off the Cosby tent.

The Flaming Lips rolled out their usual epic stage show and festival friendly good vibes as the weekend began to wrap up, and wowed the Electric arena with lasers, streamer rocket launchers and giant balloons. Other highlights included Cap Pas Cap, Halfset, Fleet Foxes, The Sugarhill Gang, Flock of Seagulls (really!), and Dinosaur Jr.

The last big festival of the summer is nearly upon us, and as usual the lineup features some of the must-see acts of the year. Already 2009 has seen some awesome albums from Bat For Lashes, Micachu & The Shapes, Florence & The Machine... and many other artists which grace the Electric Picnic bill.

I've always thought that the lineup for Electric Picnic is kinda like an bit of a crazy mixtape composed for you by the organisers of the festival. There may be a lot of stuff you haven't heard of, but you can be damned sure that the vast majority of it is gonna be stuff you'll like.

500 Days of Summer review

500 Days of Summer stars Joseph Gordon Levitt as the likeable Tom, a Smiths devotee who writes greeting card slogans for a living and is on an eternal quest to meet ‘The One’. He soon sets his sights on the Summer of the title, Zooey Deschanel, when she joins the greeting card company. The movie plays out like a left-of-centre mix of Memento, Say Anything and Stranger than Fiction, jumping back and forward through the 500 days that Tom has known Summer, and filling in the blanks that lead to their break-up (where the movie begins). The leads and supporting cast are generally likeable (although Deschanel can be a matter of taste for some people), and deliver nicely judged performances.
The soundtrack is strong if largely familiar, featuring the Smiths (of course), Pixies, Temper Trap, Feist, Doves and Hall & Oates (oh yes!) among others. While not reinventing the wheel, 500 Days of Summer is a light yet intelligent, enjoyable watch, well handled by Mark Webb, who has previously only directed music videos. While it won’t be to everyone’s taste (it is still basically a romantic comedy/drama, if a rather good one), 500 Days is a bittersweet treat. Released on September 2nd.

Get Back Guinozzi is the brainchild of two French friends, Eglantine Gouzy and Fred Landini. Their debut album is set for release on FatCat in October 2009. A five-piece band (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, vox) was formed and played their debut shows in September 2008. The band’s music is outsider pop,with hints of quirky and breezy and a strong French slant and a wide range of influences taking in the likes of Talking Heads, The Feelies, early B-52’s, The Slits, The Cure, The Residents, Animal Collective, Jonathan Richman, and Serge Gainsbourg. The band’s debut single (‘Low Files Tropical’) will be released on September 14th and followed a month later by the album, Carpet Madness.

Irish duo You're Only Massive recently decamped to Germany to work on new material, and have started the ball rolling with a cracking single, Under the Neon. This is a performance of the afforementioned song live from H8R H8R in Berlin last monday. The track is performed with just vocals, drum pads (SPD-S, yummy), and a distortion pedal; and it comes across very well- with a great little hook on the chorus and the vocal tying in perfectly with the synth. It seems Deutchland is treating these folks well.

SJ ESAU is a master manipulator of organic sounds, a singer with a sense of humor, an ear for the beautifully bizarre, and a maker of expansive and explosive ventures into unexplored musical back alleys.

At the age of ten Samuel Wisternoff, as he’s known to his mother, was halfway through a four-year rap career in the burgeoning late 80s Bristol scene. He has freestyled with 3D from Massive Attack, Tricky turned him onto the great adventures of Slick Rick, and under the name TFP, Sam (still ten years old) and his older brother were signed to Smith & Mighty’s prestigious Three Stripe Records.

Before retiring from the rap game at twelve, Sam battled his way to second place in the cutthroat DMC emceeing championships. While his brother Jody went off to pursue dreams of becoming a world-renowned deep house DJ/producer SJ Esau was busy carving out the most unique of existences for himself. Through a number of band incarnations, various solo explorations and ongoing collaborative projects, SJ has developed his own carefully constructed brand of chaos which neither repeats itself nor spins wild beyond the realm of comprehension.

With three and a half SJ Esau LPs under his belt (plus Stop Touching My Cat, a compilation of reworked SJ originals featuring WHY? among others), Wisternoff brought his impressive body of work to Anticon in 2007, releasing the internationally ballyhooed Wrong Faced Cat Feed Collapse. In 2008, he returned with Small Vessel, and in May this year he released covers record The Gist which promises to “ruin” the works of They Might Be Giants, Broadcast, Deerhoof and more.

Of course, some constants have remained throughout: Sam Wisternoff still lives in Bristol, and is surrounded by a still under-publicized community of hard-working artists poised to start a revolution in sound. He has two cats (who occasionally provide backing vocals), admires the works of Kurt Vonnegut, and is usually confused, which seems to work out just fine for the rest of us.

Autumn Owls have their gig-feet firmly back on after a brief hibernation period while Gary McFarlane (guitar, vocals) and Will Purtill (drums, percussion) trained up two new recruits.

Having independently recorded and released not one, but two widely acclaimed E.P's in 2008 (Insomnia Lodge/ On The Trail of The Disappearing) , 2009 has been somewhat of a quiet year so far. However with their debut album a work in progress and recording expected to start in September catch their dark, experimental but melodic tones at one of their many shows over the next month to catch up.

Drunken Boat have been keeping busy for the last few months headlining in Anseo with Red Eskimo and Peter Delaney, supporting At Last An Atlas and then The Hollows for their EP launch in Dublin and Galway. They've played with heroes Joan of Arc and Love of Everything from Chicago and supported The Jimmy Cake in addition to slots in Seomra Spraoi and Whelans. After their gigs with Autumn Owls they plan to head to the studio in September to record a full length album of soothing folky rock and experimentation!
