Don't bogart the Cobain
Award winning Berlin based artist Natascha Stellmach is set to smoke Kurt Cobain's cremated ashes,Cobain's ashes will be rolled into a joint to be smoked at the completion of the exhibition.
Stellmach somehow acquired the ashes of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain (when asked how she got them she said "That's confidential and kind of magic. They came to me. And I am setting him free”), and has transformed the grunge icon’s remains into an installation investigating suicide and the power of desecration.Stellmach's work comprises a "death cycle" of five pieces, and the conclusion presents a joint containing Cobain's ashes, which is held in an antique case engraved with the work's title (seen above.)

Achieving Art
Achieving Art, an exhibition in aid of Saplings School for Autistic Kids opens tonight at The Bernard Shaw. The exhibition features the work of 40 Irish and international illustrators, graffiti and contemporary artists including Maser, Boz, Asbestos,Myse, Dano, A1One & Hush. There's a silent auction and FREE BEER.
Thursday 10th July sees the return for the second year of the hugely successful ACHIEVING ART - a charity art exhibition for ‘Saplings’, a special needs school for children with autism www.saplings.org/Html/schools.html.
Achieving Art was conceived in 2007 by a parent concerned with the chronic under funding of autism services in Ireland. Upon enlisting the skills of good friend working in the street art scene, together they organized the inaugural Achieving Art exhibition in July 2007 which ran for 2 months, also at the Bernhard Shaw . This was the first exhibit of its kind in Ireland showcasing a variety of street & graffiti art alongside contemporary artists & designers. Due to the overwhelming success of last year, raising in excess of 8,000euro, the exhibition returns for its second outing.
Saplings is a school in Rathfarnam which caters for 24 children in varying degrees of the autistic spectrum disorder. In order for the children to achieve their maximum potential it is necessary to raise funds for speech & language therapy, & occupational therapy. All funds raised during the art exhibition will go towards the provision of these essential services.
Without the artists involved, who have so kindly donated both their time & art pieces to this worthy cause, this would not be possible. Therefore, we are delighted to launch this month long exhibition with an opening party at the Bernhard Shaw Bar in Portobello’s Richmond Street, where all the artists & public are encouraged to enjoy the celebration & hopefully go home with an original piece of work from some of the countries most exciting upcoming artists.

STEVEN POWERS a.k.a. ESPO DOES DUBLIN

ESPO (Stephen J. Powers) is a New York City graffiti artist. His name is an acronym for "Exterior Surface Painting Outreach."Powers is from Philadelphia's Overbrook neighborhood; he graduated from Robert E. Lamberton High School in 1987 and took classes at the University of the Arts. He moved to New York in 1995. He painted on storefront grates in Fort Greene, Bedford-Stuyvesant, TriBeCa and the South Bronx, covering the entire grate with white or silver paint and writing his name over it.Powers painted in daylight, wearing street clothes; he told the New York Times in 1999 that when passerby asked what he was doing he would tell them, "I'm with Exterior Surface Painting Outreach, and I'm cleaning up this gate"; the official-sounding name was enough to ward most people off. Powers targeted shops that appeared to be out of business and grates that were already heavily vandalized, describing his graffiti as a public service. In 1999 he said that he had painted around 70 grates. In December 1999 Powers was arrested for vandalism while he was in the midst of organizing a protest against Rudolph Giuliani; he charged that the arrest was politically motivated. A New York Times editorial criticized the Giuliani administration for its secrecy in the case (while dismissing Powers as "a noodge and self-promoter, one of those deliberately annoying characters whom most of us could do without"). He stated in 2000 that he had given up graffiti; his studio art has sold for as much as $20,000. He is the author of a book on graffiti's history, "The Art of Getting Over," published by St. Martin's Press in 1999. He has also designed clothing for Marc Ecko, Nike, and Calvin Klein. He is living and working in Dublin on a Fulbright Scholarship.

Slate Exhibit In The Bernard Shaw
The Bernard Shaw are continuing their habit of putting on amazing exhibitions with a healthy dose of crazy. Last Thursday the pub launched a retrospective of Ireland's greatest ever publication- The Slate.
For those who remember the shit-stirring gem, this will be an opportunity to refresh the memory of such journalistic classics as 'Blacks in the Jacks' & the 'Paedo Special'. For those who never got a chance to see the Slate in all its glory, head down to the Shaw in the next 3-4 weeks to check it out.
Unmissable stuff.

Death To Advertising!
A graffiti artist named 'The Decapitator' has been attacking advertisements around London in the fashion one would expect from someone with such a name. Is he making a statement about the soullessness of marketing, or is it more a sly jab at the advertising industry's failure to capture the public imagination... who cares, it's pretty funny.
