5 Second Review: Southland Tales

Richard "Donnie Darko" Kelly's follow up to his cult classic. On the shelf for a year and a half following a disastrous Cannes opening and now on DVD.

Pro's:

  • The presence of the afore-mentioned Kelly guarantee's that this will be, at the very least, interesting.
  • The Rock, Stifler, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, JT. A cast so dodgy that it can only be brilliant.
  • An out of the blue song and dance routine to The Killers "All these things that I've done" and a whole portion of the plot based around the lyrics to "Three Days" by Jane's Addiction.
  • Some awesome hallucinatory moments.
  • Deranged and trippy in that awesome way that will suck you in if you're into it.

Con's:

  • Deranged and trippy in that way that will make you turn it off a quarter of the way through its 2 and a half hour run time and scream "PRETENTIOUS WANK" at the screen. (For the record I did neither of these things).
  • The Rock, Stifler, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, JT. A cast so dodgy that it can only be...dodgy.
  • A plot so convuluted and character filled that it sometimes collapses under the weight of its own ambitions (or pretensions).
  • If you're the kind of person that...um...if this kind of thing is your cup of...um...ah fuck it.
The long and short of it is that if you've heard anything about this movie then you'll know that its fucked up deranged and not for everybody. I thought I might have been able to give more insight into the movie but the simple fact is that I can't. I enjoyed the fuck out of it. You might too. Some of you won't. It makes no sense but then at the same time that's the point.
