Point Depot becomes 'The O2'

Oh lord, has corporate sponsorship gone too far? In place of the country's largest (and crappest) indoor venue, we shall soon have the country's largest (and most shameless) advertisement. Behold the nightmare that is The O2.

"It’s what Irish music lovers have been waiting for".- theo2.ie

No, it's what O2 have been waiting for, a marketing coup of epic proportions. Consider Vodafone officially put to shame. Bigger than the Point, and sonically better (in fairness, The Point was a giant shed), the O2 will be a monstrosity finely designed to pack in the punters and wrangle every penny possible out of Ireland's 'Music Fans'. There's already a series of money-making schemes being advertised online- The VIP Club: an opportunity not only to gorge yourself at a 'luxurious private bar' during the show, but also to avoid the plebeians by entering the arena through your own private entrance; and The Premium Club, which promises MORE EXCLUSIVE seating, and a no-such-thing-as-sold-out policy.

The humdinger though that apparently o2 customers (yes, us regular phone users) get access to tickets for gigs two days before they go on sale. Good news for o2 customers- bad news for, well, music fans. O2 are being fairly shameless about this and holding gigs in The Point for ransom- if you want to catch an act in this venue, you'd better switch to o2.

Check out this corporate arseholery from their site:

"No wonder music lovers can’t wait. Even better, we’re more excited to tell O2 customers, that you and your friends will enjoy some nice extras. Imagine, you’ll have access to your own bar and facilities, as well as priority tickets to plenty of gigs."

"Register today to be eligible for priority tickets and some more of those little extras. Exclusive to O2 customers, of course."

Agh! The corporations are taking over! Oh wait, they already have...

For more nausea, head over to the official site and take the 'Virtual Tour'. On second thoughts, don't, just start working on relinquishing your fandom of any act big enough to be playing in this abomination.

I would have preferred the Durex Arena, or maybe the Tayto Dome.

Yeh, the Tayto Dome would have been savage. Something quintessentially Oirish, like the Spud-o-Plex. This could be a fun game: alternative names for The O2.

Well I'm glad I'm still O2 although I would like to attend the Tayto Dome- perhaps we could open it as a rival stadium?
