Danish Cartoonists Still Not Safe

Danish police today announced that they have arrested a number of people suspected of plotting to murder Kurt Westergaard, the Danish cartoonist responsible for creating what was possibly the most controversial image in the recent 'Prophet Mohammad' furore.

The image (right) caused riots in the Middle East & Asia resulting in the deaths of at least fifty people. These morons seem to protest and burn effigies at the drop of a hat, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to me that Westergaard is still under threat from extremists over a year on.

A statement on the arrest is due to be released by Danish authorities later today, and it will be interesting to see what happens. While my initial thought is along the lines of 'I hope they get the book thrown at them', it occurs to me that it might be a better idea to effectively turn the other cheek, and treat the crime as what it is rather than take the context into account.

Not that I want to promote leniency for this sort of carry-on, but with such potential for insanity in the area of 'Holy War', we have to remember not to get too impassioned about these kind of things, and instead try to approach it rationally & sensibly.

And hopefully someday everyone will realize that that's a much better solution than the alternative.
