Watchmen affectionados will be familiar with the novel's 'story within a story' featuring an unfortunate sailor, a ghost pirate ship, and a whole lot of gore. As has been revealed by Warner Bros, the Watchmen movie will run at the guts of three hours without Tales of the Black Freighter, which will instead be released in its own right as an animated feature.

And here's the trailer...



Much as I love the sentiment behind this addition to the film experience, I can't help but think that this looks a bit dodge. To be honest there's nothing wrong with the animation, and I'm sure it will be made well, it's simply the one spoken line in the trailer that makes me worry. Gerard Butler's acting ability has got to be questioned. Fanboys will no doubt worship him from his leading role in 300, but the crappy drawl in the above clip reeks of his (numerous) lessor achievements (Tomb Raider 2, Dracula 2000, and that utter affront to all that is Irish- PS. I Love You).

Butler got lucky with 300, lets hope the presence of Zack Snyder recalls some of that luck.

As if there weren't already enough reasons to worry about the impending Watchmen movie. Alan Moore's hollywood hatred, questions about director Zack Snyder's ability, dodgy 'hip' editing in the trailer and the inevitable declarations that the book is 'too long' and some things 'must be lost'.

All that considered there was always reason to cling to optimism, and hope that we would at least be treated to a vaguely faithful adaptation. Until now. Well, recently, anyway- I'm only hearing about this now (and maybe, so are you). Apparently the movie will commit the cardinal sin of all adaptations by changing the ending. How dare they??

Just in case you missed that, here be SPOILERS:

Those who've read the book will know that the crux of the novel is that Ozymandias creates a giant squid-thing and teleports it into the middle of New York City leading the world to believe aliens are attacking the planet, thus uniting humanity against this alien threat and ending the Cold War scenario.

The filmmakers, clearly knowing better than Alan Moore (sigh), have changed the alien squid into a machine that is built by Ozymandias & Dr Manhattan which sets off a series of Nuclear explosions throughout the world.

Clearly this is some sort of unfounded, malicious rumor spread by fanboys online who simply never wanted to see the movie come to fruition. No. Says Zack Snyder in an interview with Dark Horizons:

"The squid was not in the movie when I got the script, the squid was never in any draft that I saw. My point is only that there was this elegant solution to the squid problem that I kind of embraced. I'm a fan of the thing as much as anyone, I was saying what are we going to do about this before I even read the script."

You horrible bastard, Snyder.

The arduous task of rebuilding optimism begins here.

The genius speaks.

Click above to check out an interesting LA Times interview with the man behind Watchmen. Undoubtadly Moore has good reason to be vengeful towards hollywood, but as Dave Gibbons (artist behind Watchmen) has pointed out, he has no problem taking the money. So his very vocal naysaying of the Watchmen movie comes across as somewhat redundant.

Unfortunately he appears as something of a grumpy old man. I'll be the first to agree that the man's work has been raped, but that's not to say that it's impossible for someone to finally deliver a satisfying adaptation. Zack Snyder may or may not be the man to do so, but I think I speak for everyone out there in fanboy-land that if he did and it was... then that would rock. A lot.

Those of you saw the trailer for Watchmen (aka The no doubt disappointing adaptation of the greatest comic ever) may be wondering where and when they heard the song running through it. Some of you will remember Batman & Robin (aka the worst comic book movie of all time) and some of you may remember its theme song "The End is the Beginning is the End" by The Smashing Pumpkins (aka the last great Pumpkins song).

In a move that had to have been a dig at the afore-mentioned celluloid disaster the creators of Watchmen have used the companion piece "The Beginning is the End is the Beginning" which is prety much a remix of the first song. Below is presented both versions of the song. Director Zack Snyder has finally given us a peek at the main characters from the upcoming Watchmen movie.

For anyone who doesn't yet know, Watchmen is a literary masterpiece by Alan Moore (From Hell, V For Vendetta), which is widely considered (including by myself) the greatest comic book of all time. The hugely anticipated movie comes out in one year's time.

Zack Snyder, director of the excellent 'Dawn Of The Dead' remake & the bad-ass-no-matter-what-Eamonn-thinks '300' is currently shooting an adaption of the 'Greatest Comic Book Of All Time'.

Which is Watchmen, in case you didn't know.

The book is amazing (that's probably an understatement) and has long been in the pipeline for a movie version only to fall through for one reason or another. Now it's actually happening, thank jeebus, and the good people at Empire online have been good enough to put together a crash course in the need-to-know for the movie version.
