In scrambling to to fill the huge financial void left by Michael Jackson's passing, concert promoters AEG sold hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage to Sony Pictures, who figured they could make a quick buck out of a cinema version. Said film is to be released on October 28th, and (bizarrely) run for two weeks only. To satisfy anticipated demand, tickets are going on sale a month early- on September 27th.

The film's trailer premiered yesterday at the MTV MVAs, and here it is for you in internetland:

The King of Pop is dead.

It's hard to think of anyone who influenced my love of music more- I remember the year when all I wanted for Christmas was 'Bad' on tape; I remember being 8 years old and dancing to Thriller non-stop; I remember seeing him play at Lansdowne Road and leaving the stage by jetpack; I remember childhood car journeys where the only topic of conversation was which Jackson song we should listen to; I remember hearing 'Man in the Mirror' and being introduced to music as social commentary, as a conscience.

I had tickets to the second night of the comeback tour that will not now happen. While I regret the fact that I won't get to see him again, I wish more so that he had been able to play even one last gig. As Kurt Vonnegut would have termed it: he was an entertainment machine. He lived, he entertained, he made people happy. I'm sure performing to an audience one last time would have made him happy too.

Michael Jackson left us with a catalogue of music that the greatest musical genius would be envious of. Here's my favourite track- one that showed that while he could be unbelievably catchy, he was also capable of injecting his songs with a tremendously heartfelt and emotive passion.

Long live The King.

For those like me who are possessed by a morbid curiosity about this, here's Kanye West's remix of Billie Jean for the 25th Anniversary Edition of Thriller.

His only vocal contributions are sporadic bursts of "Yeh", "Uh huh", and on one occasion "You're number one!", but the main victim is the songs iconic, nigh on perfect, beat.

Jermaine has been talking it up that the Jackson 5 will be doing a world tour next year, with Michael on board. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't happen. AND, I'd much prefer a King Of Pop solo tour, because as depressing as that might be considering the state MJ is in these days, 5 old fat and surgically altered dudes trying to emulate their pre-pubescent success is somewhat more pathetic.

That said, if MJ toured again it would dilute one of my claims to greatness, having been jammy enough to attend his last Irish gig- on the 'Dangerous' tour (so when he was still the coolest person on the planet). It still sticks out as one of the best shows I've ever seen, as he not only transformed into a werewolf onstage, but also exited the arena by jet pack. How fucking slick is that?
