Thomas Truax

New York City's Thomas Truax (pronounced troo-aks) is a left field troubadour and inventor/player of strange self-made instruments like his now legendary 'Hornicator' and a motorized mechanical drum machine called 'Sister Spinster'. He employs these and other contraptions as well as traditional instruments in exceptionally crafted, witty and often touching songs. Splendid magazine recently called him "one of the five or ten best singer/songwriters in the world that you've never heard of...an exceptional talent, unique and resistant to comparison, yet fairly accessible even to casual listeners."

He's got three acclaimed full length albums under his belt: 'Audio Addiction', 'Full Moon Over Wowtown', and 'Why Dogs Howl at the Moon', and numerous singles and compilation tracks. He has toured nearly
constantly for the past five years, most recently doing support tours with the Dresden Dolls and Duke Special. He's played Glastonbury and Edinburgh Fringe festivals and appeared on MTV. His own radio serial, The Wowtown News, plays on Resonance FM in London.

"In Truax's hands music is merely a vessel for his scattershot imagination, earning him a place in a lineage that includes Captain Beefheart and Viv Stanshall and, latterly, a less-frenetic Liars. Equal parts music-hall, avant-garde and garage rock, 'Full Moon Over Wowtown' is far more accessible than these references imply, thanks chiefly to Truax's lycanthropic bark... and his obvious love of primal rock 'n' roll. Had the bands that exploded out of CBGB's in '76 been inspired by LSD rather than cheap speed one suspects that the results would have been disturbingly like this, and that today's bands
hell-bent on recycling those days would be more interesting as well as
a hell of a lot better."

Electric Eel Shock
Electric Eel Shock are a glorious celebration of Classic Rock, Punk and Metal. A true power trio from the time before rock became fractured into a diverse multitude of sub-genres and we were all still one big happy Rock & Roll family.

"EES are nothing short of awesome" - Brent Hinds (Mastodon)

EES left their native Japan in 1999 to see what they could make of America and they have been on a near constant world tour ever since. EES paid their way by selling merchandise and their self recorded album "SLAYERS BAY BLUES" at their gigs. Headlining a stage at the prestigious Roskilde Festival in Denmark was a key early event for the band. By 2004 EES had toured 27 countries around the world and they decided it was about time to release an album: "GO EUROPE!" became the first commercially available EES release and the band performed at 30 European Summer Festivals.

Follow up album "BEAT ME" was recorded in Holland early 2005 with legendary producer Attie Bauw (Judas Priest, Scorpions, Bootsy Collins etc). BEAT ME achieved much critical acclaim from press and fans alike and EES continued to conquer the international musical scene step by step throughout 2005 and 2006 adding Australia and parts of Asia to their widening travels.

In 2007 Electric Eel Shock again worked with Attie Bauw on a new album: "TRANSWORLD ULTRA ROCK" is seems to sum up the past, present and future of the band in one album. The feeling seems to span the entire EES back catalogue, including the raw inventiveness of Slayers Bay Blues, the catchy songs of the GO albums and the hard tight rock of Beat Me. This album has it all. The overall atmosphere is more positive than ever before. It’s a feeling that reflects the Shock’s ongoing progression, from playing every dive bar and toilet around the world to selling out larger more prestigious venues.

And as if you needed more convincing to go it will be Adebisi Shank first Dublin gig in ages and will be a chance to catch a sneak preview of their new album

Rocky IV Reckyrd (review)

what is The Vinny Club sound well it sounds like Rutger Hauer and Kurt Russell are playing a Commodore 64 in the back of a DeLorean traveling at 88mph. Ferris Bueller's on the roof having a lightsaber fight with Clubber Lang. There's a gremlin chewing on the flux capacitor and a T-800 on the bonnet punching through the windscreen. Bono's driving and so much more.

Rocky IV Reckyrd is a concept album based on Rocky IV (the best rocky film) from The Vinny Club, heres what the press release had to say about The Vinny Club

The Vinny Club is the lovechild of Vinny , bassist in cult Irish band Adebisi Shank. Born out of a dangerous obsession with 8 bit Video games and 80's action movies, his unique brand of synth pop fun will leave you with a boner in your pants and a grin on your face. By the age 11 Vinny had constructed a makeshift recording studio under his bed where he retreated to for hours on end

The album starts off with "Its Not You Its Of"(19833333333333333333) the song i heard at every party last year and it still sounds fresh and even better when your fucked up. From there, the album blasts off with some track you might have heard off his myspace to some ones you wont all with that sexy cracking beats and funky baselines that is the Vinny club sound , they also have a very complex structure but always keeping that pop element (all songs track in at under 3:30 making them quick fast slices of excellence) that makes you grin and, well, get a boner just like the press release said. Ive been struggling over this review because i wanted to do the album justice , but i don't think words can convey what this album is like i feel it has to be heard, and then you will know my joy (stick). I think the only option for you people is to come to his debut gig in Andrews lane on the 31st of may (its only a tenner and you get the album as well) and see it for yourself live. I will be there dancing up a storm to the chiptune bliss. Also on the night will be dj sets from super extra bonus party , Foggy Notions and Bats

To wet your appetite, I now offer my favorite track off the album: Drago's Revenge. Here's what Vinny had to say about the track:

so imagine rocky V, except just after rocky n fam move back to the old neighborhood, drago pulls up in a benz, steps out and punches rocky to death in front of adrian and sage stallone(who shouldn't even have been in that film, like the kid is 6 in rocky IV, rocky V is supposed to be a couple of weeks later, all of a sudden the kids 12 or 13?? anyway), yeah after that he punches the wife and son to death too, but he lets uncle paulie live for some reason(cos he's already dead inside maybe)

MP3> the Vinny Club - Drago's Revenge

so with all that in mind i leave you with

Video of the Day

...comes courtesy of Tara:

Birdy Nam Nam are a French DJ crew whose aim is to use turntables as full on instruments, rather than just a medium. They're former DMC Technics World Team Champions, and released their self-titled debut album in 2006.

The video below is a live performance of Absesses, and is pretty damned amazing. Check it out:

His first release was 2007's Tech Noir EP which garnered rave reviews despite being available as a cassette only release, on his own, "Vince Rekyrds". Next came 2008's Rocky IV Reckyrd, a concept album based around the fourth Rocky movie. It's an album bursting with glitchy synth pop fun, super fast melodies, whip cracking sexy beats and more funky basslines than you can shake a joystick at.

M83 Graveyard Girl

Via Nialler9.
Not enough people know about M83 and they're playing Andrews Lane on the 25th of April, so here's the video for "Graveyard Girl" which contiunes with their theme of Suburban people being Suburban people that they've been using in their last few vids and as Nialler9 also points out the synthy sound going through the track at times does sound like the score to a John Hughes movie. And how awesome is that?
