Chosen by Adcat: There's something special about Burial though I'm not sure exactly what. I listened to it on headphones as we pulled into Aberdeen at 5am on our last tour. Happy times.
3. Broken Social Scene - Anthems for a 17 year old girl
Chosen by Evecat: 'You Forgot It In People' is just really really good in general, isn't it?
4. Joanna Newsom - Peach, Plum, Pear
Chosen by Bencat: The two Joanna Newsom albums have pretty much raised the bar for all singer-songwriters these days. Any song from either could have made it onto this mixtape.
5. Air - Alone in Kyoto
Chosen by Tomcat: Tom likes to chill out to Air and drink White Lightning out of a watering can. And he doesn't care what anyone thinks.
6. Radiohead - You and Whose Army
Chosen by Evecat: It's a pretty underrated Radiohead song, this. It was probably the highlight of their Victoria Park set the other day for us.
7. Kashmir - Rocket Brothers
Chosen by Tomcat: Kashmir are pretty much the biggest band in Denmark but are basically unheard of outside of its shores. They used to sound like System of A Down, but as you can see they've progressed somewhat...
8. Bjork - All is Full of Love
Chosen by Dougcat: Just one of those perfect songs; lyrics, music, video; everything is just lovely.
9. Ben Frost - Theory of Machines
Chosen by Adcat: Only heard this the other day and bought the album immediately. Some joker was deafening everyone in HMV on Oxford Street with it and I fell in love with it instantly.

Ben Kweller - "The Rules"
Ben Kweller kicks ass. These lyrics feel like Victor Mancini's rowdy, pissed-off subtext. I love that it starts off the soundtrack with some slamming indie rock and that it comes in during the colonial village while we're looking at all the puffy shirts and bonnets.
The Natural History - "Don't You Ever" (rare)
I only found this band recently, but I listened to them all through post. Max Tepper's vocals are superb. I actually prefer this version to the one by Spoon and I'm a huge Spoon fan. The band broke up a few years ago. I'm going to picket their houses until they get back together.
Fiery Furnaces - "Navy Nurse"
This groove just takes your breath away.
Radiohead - "Reckoner"
Like most people, I am a huge Radiohead fan. The adaptation took me years to write so I wrote it first to Kid A, then Amnesiac and then Hail to the Thief. Later, I learned from Chuck Palahniuk that he had written the novel while listening to their song, "Creep." In Rainbows came out while we were editing and I used almost every track in my early temp cuts of the movie. They all fit really well, but I particularly loved "Reckoner." The tension between Thom Yorke's keening vocals and Phil Selway's brilliant, driving drum track fit so perfectly that it worked almost like score. I was truly dreading the day when we'd have to take it out. Somehow ATO Pictures producer, Johnathan Dorfman persuaded their manager to show the band some footage and to our shock they were generous enough to let us use the song. It's a monumental addition to the movie.
Alap Momin - "Sin Terror"
I love this jam. We needed music for the strip-club scenes and music supervisors Lyle Hysen and Ken Weinstein knew Alap Momin from the band Dälek and he was kind enough to cook this up just for the movie. He even tailored the tracks to the scenes. The driving discordant build they layered into this piece feels like it's feeding the tension between Denny and Victor.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - "Satan Said Dance"
I loved their first album and we needed something dark but not too heavy for Victor's sudden rollercoaster ride back to the dark side. Hysen and Weinstein pitched this song and when we saw it over the scene it was just right.
Buzzcocks - "Orgasm Addict" (rare)
This is the anthem. I sort of grew up loving The Buzzcocks, moshing my way through their songs in the East Village. I must have played it every day I was writing "Choke." I always thought we'd open the movie with it, but it didn't work out. In any case here is a cool alternate version with a more deadpan feel and at least it made it on to our soundtrack.
Death Cab For Cutie - "No Sunlight"
What can you say, they're just really, really good.
Blitzen Trapper - "Wicked" (unreleased)
We listened to a lot of Blitzen Trapper during the crazed five-week summer shoot. It just seemed to fit with spending your 18-hour days in a sweltering mental hospital. They've got some excellent chaos going on.
Ms. Tyree Sugar Jones - "If You Feel It"
This plays in another tricky scene where everything we tried felt wrong. And then I got turned on to the soulful sexy stylings of Ms. Tyree "Sugar" Jones. You put this on and you know some clothes are coming off.
My Morning Jacket - "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream Pt 1"
We're all big Jacket fans. Listened to them constantly during the shoot. Very proud to have them on here.
Shout Out Louds - "Bicycle" (rare)
Nothing like a little kick ass Swedish indie rock. They're like The Shins' attitudinal Scandinavian cousins.
Twilight Singers - "There's Been An Accident"
One of the producers, Contrafilm's Beau Flynn, and I have been Greg Dulli fans for years. I listened to The Twilight Singers a lot when I was writing the script. The song is really moving in a haunting, portentous way that really works for the movie.
Nicole Atkins - "Crystal Ship" (unreleased)
Brilliant. She's got a great torchy, Peggy Lee sound with just enough tongue in cheek to feel like a perfect citizen of the Palahniuk world.

And Radiohead being Radiohead the video is a little different , the video was made using "3D plotting technologies collected information about the shapes and relative distances of objects" and the "video was created entirely with visualizations of that data."

he also thinks that Radioheads live show is boring to watch.
"I admire bands like Radiohead, but the idea of being that serious? Fuck that, get up on stage and blow shit up! Bands that stand by their microphones and strum their guitars are forgetting one important point - people are bringing their eyes, it's audio and visual. If you're not fulfilling the visual part, it's like watching a movie with your eyes closed.

5. Curtis Mayfield- Move On Up
Apart from the Mayfield's lyrics- urging aspiration and optimism, yet compromise ("Take nothing less than the second best")- this song has voting significance for those who've watched 'The Wire'. It provides the soundtrack to 'Cutty' Wise's election morning run in Season 4, and one of the pivotal moments in the series' political storyline. Classic use of music in TV- perfect for the scene, and really makes you think about the lyrics. You can watch the clip here.

4. Tokyo Police Club- Your English Is Good
It's a bitchin pop-song, and Dave Monks' lyrics shamelessly rip the piss out of Politicians half-assed attempts to act sincere. "You don't need a change- you're future's with us!" and the oh so subtle refrain of "Give us your vote if you know what's good for you". Deadly.

3. The Who- Won't Get Fooled Again
Pete Townshend seems a bit fed of up the same old shit, and 'Won't Get Fooled Again' is practically the ultimate anti-voting anthem. Apparently a British Labour government in the 70s got into power on the back of student riots demanding change. When Labour got in, they promptly forgot about all their promises and just did whatever the hell they wanted to do. Hmm, sounds familiar...
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" sums up Townshend's disillusionment with 'The System', and his coda is effectively him saying 'fuck this' and buggering off to live in a commune.

2. Stevie Wonder- You Haven't Done Nothing
Good ol' Stevie Wonder becomes the voice of the people, preaching about how much of a failure & general arsehole Richard Nixon was. And as we all know, back in the day Stevie found it nigh on impossible to do anything without being incredibly funky. The lesson is: if you can't vote, buy a clavinet and recruit a backing band- it's the next best thing.

One of my favourite Radiohead tracks, you can almost feel Thom Yorke spitting with disgust as he takes pops at every aspect of fake-smile politics. As always, his disgust is articulated to perfection: "Riot shields, voodoo economics, it's just business...".

Radiohead stick it to the Greatest Hits at Malahide
You may not have heard about Radiohead's beef with the Greatest Hits album just been released by their old record label but its a beef they've made very vocal in recent weeks. So much so in fact that after they played their last song on Saturday night I said to myself that this was a great way to prove to people that they don't need such an anthology collection, as through the course of the gig they play barely any songs that could be considered classic Radiohead or at the very least recognisable to the casual fan/people who bailed out after OK Computer. That is until I found out what they played the previous night.
Fortunate for myself that I'm enough of a Radiohead fan that I don't need to hear the likes of "Creep" and "High and Dry" at a gig, but you can tell there is a few people in the crowd who hold tracks like these amongst their favourite songs and as a result feel a little bit let down by the bands continuing to defy expectations.
If it isn't apparently obvious to most that Radiohead (while perhaps not your favourite band) are in fact the Best band existing in the world at the moment then tonight is another step towards that realisation as they plough through innovative song after innovative song and clearly in love with performing these too. Always a fantastic live band they can't disappoint anybody who is willing to pull their head out of their asses and experience masters at the height of their game.
Incidentally for those who are thinking of checking out the Malahide castle gigs then note two things: 1) It is an EXCELLENT venue for live music. 2) If you haven't got the cash then you can go and sit in the grounds of the castle and still see the band with great audio at no cost whatsoever. Something I reckon I might have done for both Neil Young and Eric Clapton.

But it'll cost ya. Radiohead continue to show the real cost of releasing an album for free- by trying to squeeze a few more sheckles out of folk for remixing their new single, Nude. While other acts such as the mighty Cursive have run similar remixing ventures in the past (click), they have remained free of charge.
Radiohead, however, are charging potential remixers per track on iTunes. Not track as in song, but as in instrument. You want the bass? 99c. Wanna add the drums? Another 99c. Think vocals are essential? Well, you get the picture...
Pretty shitty methinks.

Give The People What WE Want: Islands Review
When Eels played at Oxegen in 2006, the audience was presented with thrashy versions of delicate pop songs, and a security guard performing dance & kung-fu moves on stage for the duration of the show. My disbelief was summed up perfectly at the time by Bob: "I've never seen a band perform with such contempt for their own fans".
In an eerie foreshadowing of things to come, Eels 'Beautiful Freak' was playing over the PA when I arrived at Whelans last night to watch Islands. While their performance did not reach the lows of Eels Oxegen set, it was clear from the beginning who Islands were out to please- themselves.

After a prolonged delay in taking the stage, the band finally appeared and started off with a slow, quiet number which had much of the (fairly substantial) crowd heading to the bar. This unknown quiet opener was followed by an instrumental track, and then a new song. It was an uphill struggle for the band. They needed to start winning over the crowd- but with tracks such as Rough Gem & Where There's a Will, There's a Whalebone in their repertoire, this should not have been a problem.
When the horn playing started (I think it was a bass clarinet), things started looking up. The band cracked out a sort of rag-time number that did something towards getting the crowd behind them. Finally, five or six songs in we hear a song from their album, Return to the Sea (their only record, might I add. The new album isn't out til April). It's one that could be considered filler, but at least we're on the right track. Then, rather than build on this momentum, one gets the feeling of 'that should hold em for a while' as the band lash in to another run of new and obscure material.
Some of the crowd are visibly disappointed, the bulk of the revelers being more mopey than jumpy. The band are clearly saving all their crowd-pleasers for the end of the show. The entire performance must be building towards an inspired crescendo.
Then singer, Nick Diamonds announces that the next song will be the band's last.
What??
I, like others, am not impressed. Diamonds notices this. "You know we'll really be playing more, right", he offers. "You'd want to be..", the crowd collectively mumbles. "Play Whalebone!", begs one punter. Diamonds' response: "Yeh... maybe".
Sensing the discontent, Islands play Don't call me Whitney, Bobby, one of the album's more popular offerings, raising some hopes for the encore- but after their minute or two offstage, the band return with another unheard track- so quiet that Diamonds takes it upon himself to shush the crowd. They finish with Return to the Sea's nine-and-a-half-minute opener, Swans, but they've already lost me.
What's the problem with giving the people what they want? I'm reminded of Radiohead's brief stint of refusing to play Creep, but (a) I sincerely doubt Islands have had as many requests for their popular songs, and (b) Radiohead had a huge back-catalog of material to chose from- Islands have one album.
I left the show with a bitter taste in my mouth. When I first heard Return to the Sea in 2006, I was resigned to the fact that I'd more than likely never see these amazing songs live. Unfortunately, even after seeing the band play.. that still seems to be the case.
