Estel/Mike Watt/Steve Mackay cd launch + Tenth year anniversary gig

On the 9th of Janurary Estel release their first volume of collaborations with Mike Watt (co-founder of The Minutemen and fIREHOSE, and as of 2003 bassist for the reunited Iggy Pop & The Stooges as well as many other bands) and Steve Mackay ( an American tenor saxophone player, best known for his participation on The Stooges' influential second album Fun House)
And to celebrate this Estel are playing a few dates around the country (more about the gigs at the end), but not only are they releasing this quality collaboration they're also marking Estel's 10 years together as a band which in itself is fucking huge.

As for the CD itself, well I really fucking liked it and really shows what Estel can do. The album is dark and atmospheric, sometimes slow and then jumping into full on freak out with a touch of psychedelic in the mix, this is not a band trying to play along or keep up with two legends this is full on collaboration and don't take my meandering word for it, listen for yourself.

Sugarlips gigs present Diane and the Shell,The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock, ABAM and Jezery

Saturday the 18th of October in the lower deck
info on all the bands in the read more

Diane and the Shell

Diane and the Shell is a Sicilian instrumental indie- math- experimental- rock band.
These four musicians from Catania, Italy are in love with the loudest volume of their amps and have a passion for angular and geometric, yet organic, song structures. The music brings to mind images of a lilting and sensuous dance thousands of feet above terra firma, caressing the outer limits of our atmosphere and roaring back down to earth like a jet airplane. 30,000 Feet Tarantella is a work full of moody irony, joy, and passion. Diane and the Shell illuminates a direct, powerful, and clear sound rich with allegorical metaphors, given life in haunting orchestral arrangements. The grace and sensitivity of their playing belies a maturity and wisdom far beyond their young ages.Their debut, The Red EP, churned forth progressive structures and mutant-disco provocations foreshadowing the fully realized work expressed with this release. 30,000 Feet Tarantella was recorded and mixed by Sacha Tilotta with the artistic production of Agostino Tilotta (Bellini, Uzeda) in one week of amusing and exhilarating delirium. To promote his new record D.a.t.s. toured U.S.A. and Italy.

The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock

Named after a poem about a haunted canal lock, the Spook plucks banjos and twangs guitars, he yelps and he drones and sings songs about doomed revolutionaries, brave partisans, corrupt politicians and constant struggle.
Live the Spook plays solo with guitar, banjo and effects or swells to full band with bass, guitars, drums
The eponymous debut album see songs in the Irish folk tradition expanded into the realms of psych, prog and post rock, channeling amongst other things, the diverse yet kindred spirits of Lift to Experience, 16 Horsepower, Thin Lizzy and The Chieftains.

ABAM

ABAM are a three-peice from Dublin who have made a habit of making kickass music.
Not descriptive enough for ya? Try..... loud.
They're kinda math-rock kinda punky, kinda Japanese poppy, with vocals that enough hook and melody to them to keep the whole thing vaguely friendly. But don't be afraid to jump around. In fact, jumping around may be quite unavoidable- the beats are amazing. In June of this year the lads recorded in Los Angeles with Rich Mouser and Jimmy Coup.

ABAM myspace

Jezery

Jezery began in January 2005, when four friends with overlapping but individual tastes in music, and experiences with bands, started putting songs together. After solid months of jam making, the jam became a gel-like substance, and Jezery tentatively stepped onto stages.
Rubbish gigs came and went with plenty of lessons learnt along the way. By November 2005 they must have started to do some things right, because Tenpastseven (Out On A Limb Records) asked them to play support on an Irish tour. That same month they recorded a cd called " Be Wide " . It introduces a band still in early development, but with a lot of the fundamentals of their sound in evidence.
In February 2007 they ventured to the studio again to record their second ep, " Six Sided Clothes", launching it with gigs in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Tralee. This is an altogether more coherent record, with a much different sound. The ep is available in Plugd in Cork, and also worldwide through Road Records

Cats*3,H4H,Jogging(ex Coldspoon Conspiracy) & Qi(ex Puget Sound)

LOWER DECK PORTOBELLO
THURSDAY OCTOBER 2nd
DOORS: 8.30
COST: €9 BEFORE 9 €10 AFTER
(Cats and cats and cats will be doing our regular feature, the hangover mix this weekend)

CATS AND CATS AND CATS
Cats and cats and cats stagger their trademark brand of catchy math rock with folk inspired post rock sections. Starting in early 2005 when friends Ben (Vocals, Guitar) and Tom (Bass, Backing Vocals) met Doug (Drums) at the University of Hertfordshire. Their debut EP, Victorialand, picked up some great reviews and the attention of the UK experimental rock underground. Never being ones to grow musically stagnant, Cats expanded their line up to include Adam (Guitar) and Eve (Violin) to record 2006’s mini album Sweet Drunk Everyone. The new direction split opinion with a weighting towards a fuller, more ambitious post rock sound. Extensive touring followed with the band sharing stages with their heroes Youthmovies, 65 Days of Static, Foals and Blood Red Shoes and performing twice at 2007’s Glastonbury Festival.

Cats x 3 were soon gaining label interest and, after releasing a split single for Wolf Party records, decided their next release would be with Big Scary Monsters records. BSM has been releasing consistently innovative and inspiring records for years and the label seemed like an obvious choice for the band. The split EP with Oxford’s This Town Needs Guns (Sept ’07) was a storming success and received rave reviews from the likes of NME, Rock Sound and Drowned in Sound. Huw Stephens invited both bands to record a Radio 1 Session which was aired in early October.

Currently the band are halfway through writing their first full length album due to be recorded in July 2008. As ever, Cats have made things interesting by inventing a list of 12 rules which the album must follow, dictating aspects such as song length, language and instrumental arrangements. The band will be releasing a very limited edition vinyl on Irish label, The Richter Collective on the 2nd of October.

Thomas Truax

New York City's Thomas Truax (pronounced troo-aks) is a left field troubadour and inventor/player of strange self-made instruments like his now legendary 'Hornicator' and a motorized mechanical drum machine called 'Sister Spinster'. He employs these and other contraptions as well as traditional instruments in exceptionally crafted, witty and often touching songs. Splendid magazine recently called him "one of the five or ten best singer/songwriters in the world that you've never heard of...an exceptional talent, unique and resistant to comparison, yet fairly accessible even to casual listeners."

He's got three acclaimed full length albums under his belt: 'Audio Addiction', 'Full Moon Over Wowtown', and 'Why Dogs Howl at the Moon', and numerous singles and compilation tracks. He has toured nearly
constantly for the past five years, most recently doing support tours with the Dresden Dolls and Duke Special. He's played Glastonbury and Edinburgh Fringe festivals and appeared on MTV. His own radio serial, The Wowtown News, plays on Resonance FM in London.

"In Truax's hands music is merely a vessel for his scattershot imagination, earning him a place in a lineage that includes Captain Beefheart and Viv Stanshall and, latterly, a less-frenetic Liars. Equal parts music-hall, avant-garde and garage rock, 'Full Moon Over Wowtown' is far more accessible than these references imply, thanks chiefly to Truax's lycanthropic bark... and his obvious love of primal rock 'n' roll. Had the bands that exploded out of CBGB's in '76 been inspired by LSD rather than cheap speed one suspects that the results would have been disturbingly like this, and that today's bands
hell-bent on recycling those days would be more interesting as well as
a hell of a lot better."

Thomas Truax - "Why Dogs Howl At The Moon"

Electric Eel Shock
Electric Eel Shock are a glorious celebration of Classic Rock, Punk and Metal. A true power trio from the time before rock became fractured into a diverse multitude of sub-genres and we were all still one big happy Rock & Roll family.

"EES are nothing short of awesome" - Brent Hinds (Mastodon)

EES left their native Japan in 1999 to see what they could make of America and they have been on a near constant world tour ever since. EES paid their way by selling merchandise and their self recorded album "SLAYERS BAY BLUES" at their gigs. Headlining a stage at the prestigious Roskilde Festival in Denmark was a key early event for the band. By 2004 EES had toured 27 countries around the world and they decided it was about time to release an album: "GO EUROPE!" became the first commercially available EES release and the band performed at 30 European Summer Festivals.

Follow up album "BEAT ME" was recorded in Holland early 2005 with legendary producer Attie Bauw (Judas Priest, Scorpions, Bootsy Collins etc). BEAT ME achieved much critical acclaim from press and fans alike and EES continued to conquer the international musical scene step by step throughout 2005 and 2006 adding Australia and parts of Asia to their widening travels.

In 2007 Electric Eel Shock again worked with Attie Bauw on a new album: "TRANSWORLD ULTRA ROCK" is seems to sum up the past, present and future of the band in one album. The feeling seems to span the entire EES back catalogue, including the raw inventiveness of Slayers Bay Blues, the catchy songs of the GO albums and the hard tight rock of Beat Me. This album has it all. The overall atmosphere is more positive than ever before. It’s a feeling that reflects the Shock’s ongoing progression, from playing every dive bar and toilet around the world to selling out larger more prestigious venues.

And as if you needed more convincing to go it will be Adebisi Shank first Dublin gig in ages and will be a chance to catch a sneak preview of their new album

Sugarlips spotlight: The Avalanche Effect

With the sugarlips gig coming up on Saturday the 5th of July (yup this Saturday) where gonna be having a closer look at all the bands playing , first up is the The Avalanche Effect from Cork, who have just released e.p. entitled: "Do You Think They Can Hear Us?" and will be playing Sugarlips as part of a tour to launch their ep.
(more in the read more)

A little bit of history on the band first
Cemented together from the rubble of several local bands,
The Avalanche Effect have emerged as guitarists Barry Ronayne and
Jon Pearson, Frank O Connell on bass, singer Steve Geaney and
Cian Heffernan behind the drums.
The initial concept was formed late into 2006 when ideas were
knocked around but the band was at this stage instrumental.
Steve joined in early 2007 to complete the outfit.
Progress was made, slowly at first with the band preferring the confines
of The Cottage to write and develop their music.

By June 2007 the band felt ready and tentatively stepped on stage for
the first time in front of packed audience at Fred's. Having been known
in other bands there were definite expectations. These were met.
The gig gave the band the much needed impetuous to move onwards,
and upwards from there.

A solid years worth of gigging has served to ingratiate
The Avalanche Effect with the local scene. Good friends were made
and some support interesting support slots were played.
Amongst them: Fight Like Apes, Hooray For Humans, Terrordactyl
and recently Tubelord and Blakfish on their March '08 Irish Tour.

The band now felt confident enough to put their music down on record.
For this, they made the trip to Tralee, Co.Kerry and the marvellous
Data Recording Studio was at their disposal. Marshalling the effort was
the excellent Ross O Donovan (of Ten Past Seven and Waiting Room fame).
The results of which is an e.p. entitled: "Do You Think They Can Hear Us?". From that Ep, here's Mentalied Matics:

MP3>The Avalanche Effect- Mentalied Matics
