I don't know if anybody else is as pissed off with DJ sets as I am but they really offend me to the very depths of my soul. Its one thing for a DJ to get recognition and fame for basically playing other people's records really well but it gets really tedious when we have the likes of Peaches (who the fuck am I and what do I do? oh right my dad's knighted) Geldof showing up to a department store opening to play her IPod for a few minutes and then getting bored and slinking off.

Its especially annoying when a band who are quite totally decent decide to do a DJ set and charge as much for that as they would for their regular slot. Its even worse when you get sold tickets under the delusion that its a proper gig you're buying tickets for. And whats even worse is when you go along and the band in question play (other peoples records) for approximately one hour and then bugger off and leave whatever bedroom DJ was on beforehand to play shit with his mates. Oh and there's silly kids all over the place. The worst kind of silly kid too.

Incidentally Bangers is now the new word for pills just so you know. This makes it all the more confusing when it's Halloween time and a little cream cracker asks you for them. I was kind of hoping she did mean the firework kind. I would have bought some to fuck at the stage too.

Justice DJ in the Ambassador tonight, and I'm quite looking forward to it. The gig is to promote the release of their new DVD, A Cross The Universe. No idea how this one slipped by unnoticed, but regardless: possibly the greatest dance band in the world today, Justice, are playing the Ambassador theater on October 26th. Tickets are 28 euros a pop.

Why are they playing a venue so small? Why was the gig not subject to mass publicity? Why despite the fact that they went on sale at 9am today are they still not sold out?

UPDATE:
There seems to be some ambiguity over whether this is a live show or a DJ set. Ticketmaster has it billed as 'Justice live', while on last.fm it's down as a DJ set. That said, being essentially DJs, what's the difference going to be? At their Oxegen slot this summer the lads seemed to be DJing, but that certainly took nothing away from the show. Fashion labels seems to have developed quite a knack of convincing decent musical acts to soundtrack their shows, the latest artists recruited being Antony and the Johnsons. The New York band have written a new track entitled Falling Shadows for Prada's fashion week, which can be checked out below:



If that's the mellow side of fashion, Dior Homme have gone the other way by commissioning Justice to soundtrack their Autumn-Winter 09 show. In typical fashion, the Justice lads delivered a storming epic with beats meeting screaming guitars. 01. Justice- Genesis (Chewie Chocolate Cookies remix)

Pretty cool take on Justice's album opener, turning things one notch further towards dancey.

02. Stevie Wonder- Superstition (Justice JNSTY remix)

One of the greatest songs of all time given the Justice treatment. This is more of an interesting curio than anything else, but goddamn, I can't get enough of that bass sound.

03. Jackson 5- I Want You Back (Rogerseventytwo remix)

Really great remix which takes a very different approach to the song... often a good move when tinkering with timeless classics.

Another departure from the style of the original, Soulwax can always be relied upon. This is probably my favorite Stones song, and there are some pretty sweet ideas in this remix.

05. The Faint- The Geeks Were Right (Does it Offend You, Yeah? remix)

Sweet remix of the Faint's bitchin new single by up-and-coming indie dancesters. Very different to the dancier Boys Noise take, and both are excellent in their own right.

06. The Faint- Worked Up So Sexual (Death Cab for Cutie remix)

An older track from The Faint, from the amazing Black-Wave Arcade album, this remix is done by Death Cab's guitarist/producer Chris Walla.

Two Bloc Party Remixes

07. Bloc Party- Mercury (CSS remix)

A suitably bright and chirpy take on Bloc Party's awesome new tune. It still packs a punch, but I guess just does it with a smile.


08. Bloc Party- I Still Remember (SebastiAn remix)

From a remix promo of this Weekend in the City single, SebestiAn's version is dirty & gritty. In a good way.

09. Eric Prydz Vs Pink Floyd- Proper Education

Another Brick in the Wall was never the kind of song you could get away with playing on a dancefloor, but Eric Prydz has done just enough to the original to make it so. Nothing drastic, just a little push.

10. The Ting Tings- Great DJ (Calvin Harris remix)

Predictibly, there's a load of Ting Tings remixes floating around at the moment. This one is, in my opinion, far and away the best, and is sure to be making some appearances at parties in the near future.

MGMT are returning to these shores yet again, this time for a show in Dublin's Ambassador theatre. The band play the venue (which is presume is no longer being turned into a library?) on November 3rd. Tickets are priced 24.50 and on sale this Thursday here.

With Rage Against the Machine being the main reason for ticket getting, most people made Sunday their day of choice for hitting Oxegen. I however couldn't resist the lure of Justice, and headed down on Saturday afternoon with dancing on my mind.

I was not disappointed.

We arrived to rain & mud, but thankfully it was the only shower of the day- we got pretty lucky on the weather front. First stop was Holy Fuck, who were very impressive with their combining of synths & beats with live bass & drums. Nice and funky, but laid back enough to start us off easy. After Holy Fuck we paid our first visit to the Dance Stage to check out Michael Mayer. The co-founder of the Kompakt label, and one half of excellent techno dou Supermayer (left) proceeded to give a masterclass in the dance-set, starting things off slow and steadily increasing the BPM to ensure that when the set finished people left on a high, and gagging for more. For a taste of Supermayer, here's Two of Us:

The 2FM New Bands Stage played host to a handful of 'ones to check out', so most of the afternoon was spent wandering in and out of there between beers & yummy Happy Pear cookies. Vampire Weekend and Alpha Beats didn't do much for me, and my five minutes at Pendulum seemed a bit too 'Scooter' to warrant hanging around.

Stuff kicked off again at 21.45 when we ventured over to the dance stage again to check out some of Boys Noize before heading to Hot Chip at ten.

Alexander Ridha (the boy in Boys Noize) had other ideas, and after a few minutes it became clear we wouldn't be getting anywhere near Hot Chip. Dirty bass and unrelenting beats made for fantastic music, while the lighting was 99% lasers, a la Tool's show in the point last year. A personal highlight came when we were treated to Ridha's remix of The Faint's The Geeks Were Right, which rocked quite hard. Check it out for yourself:

As you can see from Mr Youtube below, the atmosphere was quite decent, and the laser show rocked. Maybe next year, Hot Chip...



Having a quick change-over is definitely one of the benefits of playing a Dance stage, so after Boys Noize we were only kept waiting for a minute or two before the bright cross was raised on stage, and Genesis boomed out over the crowd. How satisfying it must be to have an opening number specifically designed for perfection... It certainly set the mood, and soon the room was a massive, sweaty pile of craziness.

Justice certainly know how to work a crowd, and throughout the set we're teased with hints of D.A.N.C.E. before it's snatched away and replaced with something else, ensuring maximum mileage from their hits. We Are Your Friends is also used as a recurring refrain, and a welcome one. I was also glad to hear an unexpected hint of their Franz Ferdinand remix sneaking into DVNO. The band play for what seems like hours, and completely justify making the trek to punchestown. Justice may not be producing the new Chili Peppers album, but I'm sure their future output is going to take them to their own heights. After this set, they've certainly proved to me that they're one of the greatest acts in the world.

By the time the music eventually finishes, the dancing can't be stopped- and continues right outside the arena where the end of the Prodigy's set can be heard from the o2 stage. We briefly entertained the thought of hanging around til the morning and watching Rage, but knowing that the happy-Justice buzz would eventually wear off, we resolved to stick to the plan and head back to Dublin. Kudos must be given to Dublin Bus for running a tight ship- we were back in no time- and collapsing into my own bed a couple of hours later made me glad of my decision. Tent-sleeping is certainly not one of my favourite aspects of festival going.

So after all the talk and the hoo-hah and the scumbags and the line-up announcements and the pictures of burning tents and the hating and the rain and the mud and more talk and hoo-hah, Oxegen has rolled around again, boasting what is probably the best line-up of all European festivals. Those of you who have been there before and have been to any other festival other than it too can attest that as far as things-to-do is concerned Oxegen is severely lacking but nobody can argue with the quality line-up showcasing some of the best that music is offering at the moment.

Most of you are already down there but its not too late and perhaps this post will show you what it is you're missing. In the read more we've picked what we think is the best of the weekend. Three categories of Acts that can't be missed, Acts worth checking out and Irish acts to see (this will not include the 4 way power-house of Irish mediocrity that is the Friday night line-up in the Green Room. As was reported here and else where on the net last week that Justice where set to produce the next Red Hot Chili Peppers record , this turned out to well just be a rumor and seems to have stemmed from of all places the Sun newspaper (we should have know it was false) and a picture of Anthony Kiedis wearing a Justice tshirt.
Mixmag.net had the skinny on the facts and had this quote from Ed Banger(the lable Justice are on) boss Pedro Winter
"This is what actually happened: I was recently in touch with Anthony Kiedis by phone. He wanted Justice to perform at a festival he's curating in the US. He said "Justice is the best album of the year". So I sent him some Ed Banger goodies and last week we discovered this amazing photo of him and Diddy at a Lakers game. I've been saying for a while that my dream is to see Justice producing albums for other artists like Justin Timberlake or the Chili Peppers."
So it looks like this was just a rumor that a few people got carried away with and well you know the rest. With Justice still to produce an album for anyone yet i think they could do better then the R.H.C.P for their first.

Busy P, the main man at Ed Banger records, has 'let slip' in an interview with datatransmission.co.uk that Justice are set to produce the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album.

This excites me.

There's yet to be any word from the Chili's camp as to whether or not this is true (the band are supposed to be on a year-long hiatus, presumably to allow John Frusciante to record & release 50 to 100 solo albums), but we do know that Anthony Kiedis is a long time Justice fan. Just this month he was pictured at an LA Lakers game sporting a Justice shirt, so chances of this story's validity are good.

I'm a fan of the Chili's recent output, and would love to see what Justice would bring to the table. Can you imagine Flea's playing with that trademark Justice fat bass sound? Wow.

I tempted fate, and fate has duly slapped me in the face. Lesson learned.

Only days after rejoicing that Oxegen may not steal too many bands from Electric Picnic this year, the dastards have gone ahead and got that 'lets prove Rob wrong' ball a-rolling.

Justice, Aphex Twin & Hot Chip have now been confirmed for the Punchestown festival. Damn. In addition to these acts, the lineup now boasts: The Chemical Brothers, Alabama 3, Interpol, Counting Crows, The Fratellis, The Raconteurs, Ian Brown, Kaiser Chiefs, Kings of Leon & R.E.M.

Justice is a big loss, that could have been a highlight of the summer. At least in the case of Hot Chip we have a Tripod show to look forward to (see detailed post below).

Let's just hope this is the end of the booking war for this year..
