Born of the ashes of seminal art thrashers Botch and Minneapolis punk heroes Kill Sadie, Seattle’s These Arms are Snakes are fast-becoming an integral part of the Pacific Northwest’s ever-dynamic musical fabric. Employing sinister guitar licks mixed with equal parts snarly vocals and a penchant for spaced out musical long form - has painted the buzz heavy Snakes as anything but conventional. The band has toured endlessly, plastering both coasts with their livid live shows and with their eyes squarely focused on progressing and challenging all the current notions of hardcore, These Arms are Snakes are now poised to take their game to the next level – bringing all the passion and promise of their previous endeavors to splendid completion. These Arms Are Snakes will release their third album, Tall Swallower & Dove, via Suicide Squeeze on October 6.

These Arms Are Snakes "Horse Girl"

Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental post-metal/post-rock band from Chicago. Similar to fellow Chicago residents Pelican, Russian Circles play epic, sprawling music which runs the gamut of heavy discordant metal to soft delicate passages. They are also known for their energetic live shows.Formed in late 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and bassist Colin DeKuiper (both formerly of another instrumental band Dakota/Dakota), they quickly recruited Dave Turncrantz, formerly of St. Louis band Riddle of Steel. In 2007 DeKuiper departed the band and Brian Cook (These Arms Are Snakes and Botch) took on the role of bass player for the writing and recording of their newest album, entitled ‘Station,’ recorded in Seattle with Producer Matt Bayles.

U:Mack night of excellence

U:Mack continue their path of bringing excellent music to the country at an affordable price. The fact that they have managed to somehow get around the monopoly created by other prickish organisations is commendable indeed and the fact that they've managed to get three awesome bands together in one venue warms the cockles of my cold heart.

Click on the read more for analysis of each.

It didn't make things any easier for the later bands that the most enjoyable part of the night for me was the opening act Chrome Hoof. Filling in for Liars who just had to run off and support Radiohead on their U.S. tour, the Hoof put on one of those performances that make you stare hard with jaw dropped and a puzzled but pleasured expression on your face. Its hard to describe exactly what it is that I saw on that stage but its certainly something that isn't for everyone. Not everybody will dig their combination of funk/punk/post-rock/electro/metal but those people are all fucked up in their mind-thoughts. Won't be missing these punters again.

It unfortunate that The Redneck Manifesto had to follow the Hoof because as good as they are (and they are very very good)- it isn't the first time I've seen them, so the surprise element isn't there. That being said they put on as great a show as they always do.

Despite the fact that this is probably about the 5th time in the last 18 months that Battles have played Dublin its still the first time I've had the pleasure of checking them out. Even after playing "Mirrored" to death all the songs they crack out seem as fresh as the the first time that I heard them. Its hard to believe that 4 men can make that kind of chaotic yet beautiful noise but they manage it. There were a few complaints from those accompanying me that perhaps they shouldn't have played their more recognisable songs like "Tonto" and "Atlas" so early on in the set but to those folks I say "Why should they pander to your preconceptions? They're Battles. They can do whatever the fuck they want".

update on tonights Japanese New Music Festival

Tsuyama Atsushi has been hospitalised with a lymph node infection and will not be able to perform at tonights concert. Yoshida Tatsuya & Kawabata Makoto have been performing the last few nights of the Japanese New Music Festival on their own, and the reports are that the shows have been magnificent! Instead of 7 sets, the guys will be performing four extended sets, details in the read more.

1.
Akaten

2.
Ruins alone

3.
Kawabata Solo

4.
Acid Mothers Temple SWR ( as a duo with sampler and Bass loop)

KAWABATA MAKOTO solo
Kawabata Makoto is best known for his speed-demon noise-fuzz guitar in Acid Mothers Temple, but he is also widely active as an unparalleled drone guitarist. Drawing upon a huge reservoir of original techniques including metal glissando and bow-work that can summon up the sound of a string ensemble or orchestra, his work in this area cannot be simply categorized as minimal, drone or experimental. You'll find it hard to believe that a single guitar can create sonic worlds of such meditative and elegant depth.

RUINS ALONE (Yoshida Tatsuya solo)
Yoshida is one of the most innovative drummer/composer/improviser in Japan's new music scene. pioneer of Drum & Bass duo RUINS was founded by Yoshida in '85 . Tunes are complicated and mysterious, and songs are sung in the language of their own invention. It's high-tension, wild, heavy, speedy, acute, and powerful tremendous ensemble never sounds like they are only two players. now RUINS had no bassist and currently he has been playing as RUINS ALONE. playing RUINS songs with sampling bass.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida)
Acid Mothers Temple have rapidly become acclaimed as the greatest, most extreme trip psychedelic group in the world. Releases have appeared on labels around the world at an amazing pace, and the magnificence of their live performances is already being whispered of as legendary. SWR is the AMT Family's most powerful battle-formation yet. featuring Kawabata and Yoshida from Ruins. their crushingly acute freakout sound will pulverize the world's legions of wannabe psych groups.

JAPANESE NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

featuring:-Yoshida Tatsuya (RUINS)
-Kawabata Makoto (Acid Mothers Temple)
-Tsuyama Atsushi (Acid Mothers Temple)
3 musicians playing 7 different projects in one night..
full info in the read more

JAPANESE NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL 2008

TSUYAMA ATSUSHI solo
Tsuyama is best known for his monster bass in Acid Mothers Temple, but he also has amazing technique of guitar and vocal. He has travelled around the world and accumulated the traditional styles of guitars/vocals in europe and asia. he adds his own interpretations and lyrical sense to create a beautiful but odd "fake traditional" musical world. recently he developed a new figure called "prog.rock >
blues-ization plan". he dismantle the masterpiece of progressive rock, and restructure it as an impromptu blues.

It's high-tension, wild, heavy, speedy, acute, and powerful tremendous
ensemble never sounds like they are only two players. now RUINS had no bassist and
currently he has been playing as RUINS ALONE. playing RUINS songs with sampling bass.

ZUBI ZUVA X (Yoshida/Tsuyama/Kawabata)
Eccentric poly-rhythmic a cappella ensemble. It covers from Gregorian chant to ethnic music, to do-wop to hardcore screaming, heavily using irregular rhythms and polyrhythm. All sorts of ideas and aberrant musicality overturn the image of a cappella. their totally meaningless lyrics and desperate performances throw the audiences into the abyss of the laughter and admiration. it makes the concept
of "singing ability"nonsense.

AKATEN (Tsuyama/Yoshida)
Formed in 1995 with the motto of "irresponsibleness" and "perfunctoriness." They easily free themselves from the spell of the traditional seriousness of the art. Using daily commodities like scissors, toothbrush, zipper, camera, and plastic
bottle as percussions, and shouting their brand names over and
over as the "songs," the show is performed under the concept of low cost and
maximum sound effect. AKATEN is the experimental convenience store
punk band that provides the sound images of cheap and simple daily lives.

ZOFFY (Tsuyama/Kawabata)
Formed in 1998. Zoffy's music hints both at the members' deep musical knowledge via their improvised performances of troubadour music and European trad, and also at their deep love for rock via their destructivist covers of classic rock songs, that
no longer sounds like anything but ZOFFY. The group believes that humor is essential in music, and their unprecedented performances stray far from the beaten track. Is this the Ultima Thule that rock music has long been aiming for?

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida)
Acid Mothers Temple have rapidly become acclaimed as the greatest, most extreme trip psychedelic group in the world. Releases have appeared on labels around the world at an amazing pace, and the magnificence of their live performances is already being whispered of as legendary. SWR is the AMT Family's most powerful battle-formation
yet. featuring Tsuyama and Kawabata from the original AMT and
Yoshida from Ruins. their crushingly acute freakout sound will pulverize the world's legions of wannabe psych groups.
