Get Back Guinozzi is the brainchild of two French friends, Eglantine Gouzy and Fred Landini. Their debut album is set for release on FatCat in October 2009. A five-piece band (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, vox) was formed and played their debut shows in September 2008. The band’s music is outsider pop,with hints of quirky and breezy and a strong French slant and a wide range of influences taking in the likes of Talking Heads, The Feelies, early B-52’s, The Slits, The Cure, The Residents, Animal Collective, Jonathan Richman, and Serge Gainsbourg. The band’s debut single (‘Low Files Tropical’) will be released on September 14th and followed a month later by the album, Carpet Madness.

Irish duo You're Only Massive recently decamped to Germany to work on new material, and have started the ball rolling with a cracking single, Under the Neon. This is a performance of the afforementioned song live from H8R H8R in Berlin last monday. The track is performed with just vocals, drum pads (SPD-S, yummy), and a distortion pedal; and it comes across very well- with a great little hook on the chorus and the vocal tying in perfectly with the synth. It seems Deutchland is treating these folks well.

Good news from the land of gig announcements: The Pixies are to play Dublin's Olympia Theatre for two nights, October 1st & 2nd. Shockingly, it's been twenty years since their classic album Doolittle was released (still sounds fresh...), and rather than buying a cake, they're celebrating by playing the album in its entirety INCLUDING all related B-sides.

This can't really be missed...

Tickets go on sale Friday July 3rd at 9 in the AM, and are priced €54.80 (standing, circle) and €44.20 (nosebleeds).

The King of Pop is dead.

It's hard to think of anyone who influenced my love of music more- I remember the year when all I wanted for Christmas was 'Bad' on tape; I remember being 8 years old and dancing to Thriller non-stop; I remember seeing him play at Lansdowne Road and leaving the stage by jetpack; I remember childhood car journeys where the only topic of conversation was which Jackson song we should listen to; I remember hearing 'Man in the Mirror' and being introduced to music as social commentary, as a conscience.

I had tickets to the second night of the comeback tour that will not now happen. While I regret the fact that I won't get to see him again, I wish more so that he had been able to play even one last gig. As Kurt Vonnegut would have termed it: he was an entertainment machine. He lived, he entertained, he made people happy. I'm sure performing to an audience one last time would have made him happy too.

Michael Jackson left us with a catalogue of music that the greatest musical genius would be envious of. Here's my favourite track- one that showed that while he could be unbelievably catchy, he was also capable of injecting his songs with a tremendously heartfelt and emotive passion.

Clockwork Noise appeared on Balcony TV yesterday to promote our new EP, Yes and No and Everything In Between- which is released on April 24th. Thanks to Stephen & Pauline for having us!

The band will be playing a gig on the night of the 24th in Greystones Theatre, opening for the excellent Heritage Centre. We'll have copies of the EP with us for sale on the night, which thanks to the great work of Jochem Van Wetten and Halley-Anne Kennedy will look like this.

As I find myself inexplicably sucked in to the Superbowl tonight, I wondered how rival TV networks have attempted to compete with the ratings behemoth that is the biggest day in American sports. As it turns out, they've gone to some lengths.

Take, for example, The Puppy Bowl, a football game played by, yes, puppies:



'Players' are penalised for relieving themselves on the field of play, local dogs watch the action from TV screens outside (we cut to see their reaction shots) and the half time show is performed by cats.

Avoiding the cute and schmaltzy angle completely, the annual Lingerie Bowl, is a football game played by, well, women in Lingerie:



So there we have it. Desperation inspires creativity... or at least thinking outside the box... slightly.

Actor Ryan Gosling has decided to expand his repertoire in a somewhat unusual way. It's turns out that when he's not being awesome in movies like Half Nelson and Lars & The Real Girl, Mr Gosling dabbles in the world of music.

After bonding with friend Zach Shields over music and 'creepy things', the pair decided to explore both avenues by forming a band. The project, named Dead Man's Bones was completed with the addition of an unusual third band member: the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir. The band have released a live video of their first song, In The Room Where You Sleep, and it certainly makes for interesting watching:



Dead Man's Bones plan to release their debut album, Never Let a Lack of Talent Get You Down, on their own record label this summer, and also have ambitious plans to tour the project using a different children's choir in each city they visit. The first port of call will be this year's SXSW festival in Austin, which should no doubt make for a pretty different SXSW experience.

Two of the bands most widely tipped for success in 2009 are set to grace the stage of Whelans on March 1st.

Passion Pit (above) & Hockey will perform a double-headliner, giving us a chance to see for ourselves whether the all this hype is justified. This will be all about Passion Pit for me. While their Chunk of Change EP still sounds amazing, Hockey seem pretty weak when one ventures past the (admittedly great) single, 'Too Fake'. Further examination of this phenomenon in the readmore.

Regardless, it should be one of those 'shows you won't want to miss', so be sure to grab a ticket quick. They go on sale this Wednesday (Jan 21st) for a very reasonable 15 euros a pop.
