5 Second Review: Slash's Autobiography

Slash spills all about Guns, Roses and how much of a prick Axl Rose is.

Pros:

  • The inside scoop from one of the key members of one of the most debauched bands there ever was.
  • Easy-going tone that gives you the feel of having a conversation with the man
  • Juicy gossip about the break up of one of the biggest rock bands in the world
  • Sex, sex, sex, drugs, drugs, drugs. Always interesting to read about other people's hell

Cons:

  • Sometimes he leans too much on the "thats just my opinion" cop-out when bitching about Axl
  • One gets the feeling that there's more stories of women and drugs that are being swept under the rug
  • Written before the Velvet Revolver seperation so its fairly lacking on the bitching for that particular corner of his life
  • As is typical with most rock biographies, unless you're playing the music while you're reading, then being told about the making of the music isn't as interesting as the stuff that inspired it.
Terrific reading for anybody who has or had even a passing interest in Guns N'Roses and terrific reading in general. Slash has always come across as a nice and generally laid back guy and the way he re-tells his story certainly adds to that. The tales of his overdoses and freak-outs occasionally straddle the line between cautionary tale and rock n'roll fantasy but you come out thinking that as much as Slash might not want to replay certain episodes of his life he certainly doesn't regret a thing.

Pigs Fly, Dr Pepper Cries

Apparently Guns N' Roses have finally delivered their new album Chinese Democracy to their record label. Axl 'I have no friends' Rose has seemingly been working on the album for the past three hundred years, and to be honest I never thought it would see the light of day.

One party that's bound to be sweating at this news is the people over at Dr Pepper, who recently promised a free can of said beverage for every person in America (except Slash) if the album was actually released this year.

According to The Rock Radio.com the band are now haggling over money (understandable considering the album has so far cost over 10 million dollars), and contemplating an offer to broadcast a reality show to coincide with the release. The show would follow the album's recording & long gestation period. How fun.

Free Dr Pepper for everyone in the USA courtesy of G N'R

For anybody who doesn't know, Chinese Democracy, the new (lets not say 'new' actully, lets say 'next') album from Guns N'Roses, has been slated for release since sometime in 1999. Its been rescheduled for every few months since then and there's still no sign of it.

Dr. Pepper however are so convinced that it won't be out by the end of the year that in a genuine bout of publicity stunt craziness they have promised every single person in the United States a free Dr Pepper if it does.

Personally I hope they do release it just for the fact that this rancid rancid drink will no doubt be put out of business by having to cater to the 300 Million+ citizens of the US for free. Please God please. Oh and I've heard the album and it ain't all that anyway. Which is a nice way of saying that as much as I want to like it, it sucks.

NME has the story
