Diane and the Shell is a Sicilian instrumental indie- math- experimental- rock band.
These four musicians from Catania, Italy are in love with the loudest volume of their amps and have a passion for angular and geometric, yet organic, song structures.The music brings to mind images of a lilting and sensuous dance thousands of feet above terra firma, caressing the outer limits of our atmosphere and roaring back down to earth like a jet airplane. 30,000 Feet Tarantella is a work full of moody irony, joy, and passion. The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock

Named after a poem about a haunted canal lock, the Spook plucks banjos and twangs guitars, he yelps and he drones and sings songs about doomed revolutionaries, brave partisans, corrupt politicians and constant struggle.
Live the Spook plays solo with guitar, banjo and effects or swells to full band with bass, guitars, drums
The eponymous debut album see songs in the Irish folk tradition expanded into the realms of psych, prog and post rock, channeling amongst other things, the diverse yet kindred spirits of Lift to Experience, 16 Horsepower, Thin Lizzy and The Chieftains.

ABAM

ABAM are a three-peice from Dublin who have made a habit of making kickass music.
Not descriptive enough for ya? Try..... loud.
They're kinda math-rock kinda punky, kinda Japanese poppy, with vocals that enough hook and melody to them to keep the whole thing vaguely friendly. But don't be afraid to jump around. In fact, jumping around may be quite unavoidable- the beats are amazing. In June of this year the lads recorded in Los Angeles with Rich Mouser and Jimmy Coup.

Jezery

Jezery began in January 2005, when four friends with overlapping but individual tastes in music, and experiences with bands, started putting songs together. After solid months of jam making, the jam became a gel-like substance, and Jezery tentatively stepped onto stages.
Rubbish gigs came and went with plenty of lessons learnt along the way. By November 2005 they must have started to do some things right, because Tenpastseven (Out On A Limb Records) asked them to play support on an Irish tour. That same month they recorded a cd called " Be Wide " . It introduces a band still in early development, but with a lot of the fundamentals of their sound in evidence.
In February 2007 they ventured to the studio again to record their second ep, " Six Sided Clothes", launching it with gigs in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Tralee. This is an altogether more coherent record, with a much different sound. The ep is available in Plugd in Cork, and also worldwide through Road Records

Arcada are an awesome four-piece from Dublin, who's blend of energy and experimentation have won them quite a few fans on the gig circuit. Influenced by a huge variety of musical styles & genres, Arcada have rolled them all up into a quirky yet kinetic package. The band have recently played well received shows with the likes of Tubelord, Blakfish, BATS & Heathers, and seem to be on the verge of taking Dublin by storm.

The tipping point may well be reached this August, as Arcada release their debut album. For now the only aural taste of the band available is from their 2007 EP, but it should be more than enough to get you excited about August. This is I Will If You Ask Me:

With the sugarlips gig coming up on Saturday the 5th of July (yup this Saturday) where gonna be having a closer look at all the bands playing , first up is the The Avalanche Effect from Cork, who have just released e.p. entitled: "Do You Think They Can Hear Us?" and will be playing Sugarlips as part of a tour to launch their ep.

A little bit of history on the band first
Cemented together from the rubble of several local bands,
The Avalanche Effect have emerged as guitarists Barry Ronayne and
Jon Pearson, Frank O Connell on bass, singer Steve Geaney and
Cian Heffernan behind the drums.
The initial concept was formed late into 2006 when ideas were
knocked around but the band was at this stage instrumental.
Steve joined in early 2007 to complete the outfit.
Progress was made, slowly at first with the band preferring the confines
of The Cottage to write and develop their music.

By June 2007 the band felt ready and tentatively stepped on stage for
the first time in front of packed audience at Fred's. Having been known
in other bands there were definite expectations. These were met.
The gig gave the band the much needed impetuous to move onwards,
and upwards from there.

A solid years worth of gigging has served to ingratiate
The Avalanche Effect with the local scene. Good friends were made
and some support interesting support slots were played.
Amongst them: Fight Like Apes, Hooray For Humans, Terrordactyl
and recently Tubelord and Blakfish on their March '08 Irish Tour.

The band now felt confident enough to put their music down on record.
For this, they made the trip to Tralee, Co.Kerry and the marvellous
Data Recording Studio was at their disposal. Marshalling the effort was
the excellent Ross O Donovan (of Ten Past Seven and Waiting Room fame).
The results of which is an e.p. entitled: "Do You Think They Can Hear Us?". From that Ep, here's Mentalied Matics:

Sugarlips presents two thirds of a Cork Invasion, with ELK & The Avalanche Effect playing alongside Dublin favorites Arcada on July 5th in the Lower Deck.

Tickets are 5 euro before nine, and 6 euro after. Madness is guaranteed.

The Sugarlips chaperoonies would like to thank everybody for turning out and making last Fridays Sugarlips gig most triumphant. For everybody who missed it...well...you missed fun times.

Being the lazy and tardy bastard that I am I missed the opening act Blind Yacketi killed Kevin McNamara who by all accounts was savage cool and plays a MEAN guitar.

Patrick Kelleher & The Wet Dreams begin the touch of surreality that will pepper the evening with the sounds of keytar, squaking and general randomness which all manages to come magically together into some pretty fucking kick ass tunes. Perhaps some paid gigs will result in the affording of a keyboard stand instead of an ironing board however therein also lies the appeal.

Hoovers and Sledgehammers continue their tradition of mentalness. Dresses and wigs are the wardrobe of the day and now with added drummerness the songs are rocktastic. Unfortunately as the drummer is so new the full back catalogue of savagery isn't fully up to speed so songs like Thats Animal, So's Your Sister and AL Pacino do not make an appearance but it bodes very well for the future and they play this Thursday in the very same venue so go check 'em out.

The next Sugarlips gig will come soon so stay tuned. Same bat time. Same bat channel.

Having heard patrick kelleher ep i was more then happy to offer his a slot on our next gig then i heard about "the wet dreams" his backing band with enough keyboards and keyboard type instruments to level as small country the band is gonna back some sonic power , on top of that too ive heard talk of some art installation going on while the band plays, details are sketchy and trying to get info for any of them was not happening they are playing their card very close to their chests and looking to surprise people with there show.
having only heard Paddys ep im not sure really what to expect from them live but what i can say is that paddy is a very accomplished songwriter and it really shines thru on his ep he has touches of Bradford cox about him sometimes as well.

Hoovers and Sledgehammers are fucking silly. Its hard to define exactly how fucking silly they are but suffice to say that silliness surrounds them in abundance. Its not really easy to say exactly what they sound like apart from the silliness but they definitely know how to make catchy little tunes. Its difficult to elaborate on what segment of society they may pander to with their silliness but they are sharp at pointing out certain weaknesses in different facets of Irish life (listen to That's Animal to hear Christy Moore taking a beating). One analogy I heard was if the Slate magazine (R.I.P.) was a band maybe it might be Hoovers and Sledgehammers. Thats kind of an old analogy seeing as The Slate doesn't exist anymore but if you know what I'm talking about then..well...you'll know what I'm talking about.

Still finding it hard to get a reach on them? Their bio states that: Members Igor Honey, Earl Mustard and Boris Pollenhands have been producing music since 2004 and have amassed a generous back catalogue of songs-5 albums worth, with each album averaging 30 songs or more. They played New York's Death Disco in September 2006 and BP Fallon thought they were great! Then he watched Igor undress in the lads toilet. They like fine whisky, Finland, Kylie Minogue and their songs to be mastered. They are currently working on an EP which will be due for release in late April 2007. Recently Charlie Schnitzel joined them on drums and now they are complete.

Its been three years since I've seen them live but rest assured I will be at the Boom Boom Room tomorrow night for Sugarlips to see these mad fuckers again and so should you.

The mighty Sugarlips is returning to Dublin next weekend with a killer lineup of up-and-comings to rock the Boom Boom Room's latest venue.

The Boom Boom Room 2 has been steadily growing at it's home in Murrays on O'Connell street, and Friday May 9th sees Sugarlips host a night of madness in new surroundings.

Hoovers & Sledgehammers, Patrick Kelleher & The Wet Dreams, and Saviours of Space all feature on the tantalising lineup.

Doors are at 8, and admission is a paltry 5 euro.

Joey from the Boom Boom Room has been in touch to clear up what exactly happened with Conways Pub at the weekend. Turns out all stories of naughtiness were exaggerated, and the real problem was down to a lot of red tape.

Hi All,

Joey from The Boom Boom Room here. Just a quick note to address the situation at Patrick Conways Pub/The Boom Boom Room.

The pub was visited by the Gardai on Fri night at closing. The manager and staff were advised that they would not be allowed to reopen the premises until a problem with their license to operate was rectified. I have been advised by the owners of Conways the reason for the reason for this is that there has been an objection lodged against the license. It has been explained to me that the license and premises are owned by a number of individuals, and that there is a disagreement regarding the premises amongst themselves. I have been advised that this is a temporary situation, and that the premises should be re-opened early this week. It has nothing to do with underage drinkers, or any other reasons related to the operation of the pub or venue.
Thanks for the kind words and support The Boom Boom Room has received in this difficult time, including those posted in this thread.

Bad news in the land of SugarLips- we've just received word that last night the Boom Boom Room was shut down by the Police for alleged naughtiness which I shant repeat here. Because of this, the venue will remain closed all weekend, thus leaving the SugarLips show homeless.


The fact that getting a replacement venue at this late hour is beyond impossible has left us no option but to call off the show.

The bands involved, Hybrasil, Story of Hair & Sarsparilla, all being as nice as apple pie, have all agreed to rescheduling, so hopefully we'll have news on that front very soon.

So apologies to those who were planning to come along tonight. We at egoeccentric & SugarLips recommend that if you're determined to go to a kickass show tonight you check out Super Extra Bonus Party who are promoting their new Ep (below) in Whelans. Tickets cost 10 euro and support comes from Captain Moonlight & Nouveaunoise.

Sarsparilla was raised in a small synth community in the green mountains of Wicklow. He soon found their small town ways oppressive and formed an escape plan with his then mentor, John Carpenter. These men promptly escaped into the Dublin underground, soon master Carpenter moved to the US, but Sarsparilla stayed in Ireland to forge his own distinctive synthesized soundscapes. Story Of Hair are a band who make quite extravagant claims, such as their ability to cure male pattern baldness, but one thing that cannot be doubted is their ability to write a hell of a song. Their quirky blend alt-rock, with a touch of shoegazer (see, I can use that word now) has served them well, while shows with the likes of Delorentos & Hooray For Humans have established them as a force to be reckoned with on the Irish music scene.

The four piece have just released their excellent debut EP, 'The Ho! Ho! Ho! Stamp', and are already planning to unleash a second offering which is being recorded in February. Even industry types are already a-knocking, with the band having been selected to play the Murphy's Live show in Crawdaddy on March 6th.

All is happening in Hair-land. So check em out. Particularly if you have issues with your hairline
