LOWER DECK PORTOBELLO

CATS AND CATS AND CATS
Cats and cats and cats stagger their trademark brand of catchy math rock with folk inspired post rock sections. Starting in early 2005 when friends Ben (Vocals, Guitar) and Tom (Bass, Backing Vocals) met Doug (Drums) at the University of Hertfordshire. Their debut EP, Victorialand, picked up some great reviews and the attention of the UK experimental rock underground. Never being ones to grow musically stagnant, Cats expanded their line up to include Adam (Guitar) and Eve (Violin) to record 2006’s mini album Sweet Drunk Everyone. The new direction split opinion with a weighting towards a fuller, more ambitious post rock sound. Extensive touring followed with the band sharing stages with their heroes Youthmovies, 65 Days of Static, Foals and Blood Red Shoes and performing twice at 2007’s Glastonbury Festival.

Cats x 3 were soon gaining label interest and, after releasing a split single for Wolf Party records, decided their next release would be with Big Scary Monsters records. BSM has been releasing consistently innovative and inspiring records for years and the label seemed like an obvious choice for the band. The split EP with Oxford’s This Town Needs Guns (Sept ’07) was a storming success and received rave reviews from the likes of NME, Rock Sound and Drowned in Sound. Huw Stephens invited both bands to record a Radio 1 Session which was aired in early October.

Currently the band are halfway through writing their first full length album due to be recorded in July 2008. As ever, Cats have made things interesting by inventing a list of 12 rules which the album must follow, dictating aspects such as song length, language and instrumental arrangements. The band will be releasing a very limited edition vinyl on Irish label, The Richter Collective on the 2nd of October.

Don't bogart the Cobain

Award winning Berlin based artist Natascha Stellmach is set to smoke Kurt Cobain's cremated ashes,Cobain's ashes will be rolled into a joint to be smoked at the completion of the exhibition.
Stellmach somehow acquired the ashes of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain (when asked how she got them she said "That's confidential and kind of magic. They came to me. And I am setting him free”), and has transformed the grunge icon’s remains into an installation investigating suicide and the power of desecration.Stellmach's work comprises a "death cycle" of five pieces, and the conclusion presents a joint containing Cobain's ashes, which is held in an antique case engraved with the work's title (seen above.)

Quest For A Classic Horror Movie

I love scary movies. Probably more than any other type of film. There's nothing better than when pictures on a screen get your adrenaline pumping and genuinely scare the bejesus out of you.

Problem is, it's quite difficult for horror movies to actually get it right. I have no qualms about watching countless amounts of movies which are undeniably awful and were never going to be anything more. In my mind, there's something nice about watching a crappy horror movie, and as any casual movie fan knows these are in no short supply. But finding a genuinely scary and well made scary movie is becoming increasingly difficult. There are many acknowledged classics which actually do the trick, but at this stage I've seen most of them. So an unseen classic is therefore a rare commodity.

Being the stubborn bugger that I am, I refuse to resign myself to a future of hoping that this week's new horror movie will live up to the standards of, say, The Shining. So with that in mind I've begun a quest. There must be at least a handful of unseen classics out there, just waiting to scare us senseless, and I'm determined to find them.

A few ground rules:

  • Gore is not scary. While it can be used in a scary fashion, it takes more than an unthinkable act of violence to make a good horror movie. This rules out a lot of the genre (and you, Eli Roth).
  • Neither is torture-porn scary. It may be harrowing and unpleasant, but it's not scary. This rules out a lot of modern horror flicks, and even a lot of so-called 'classics' (Is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre merely torture-porn? Discuss.).
  • A story is always necessary. No one cares if randomers get killed. And no, 'unsuspecting couple go to secluded place for romantic getaway only to be tortured and killed by mysterious strangers' is not a story. It's a premise. Laziness will not be tolerated.
  • While 'loud noise' style shocks and jumpy moments are acceptable, they should preferably be used in conjunction with other methods of scaring the viewer. We could devise a points system- 1 for tension, 2 for a jumpy scare, 3 for slow realising terror- but that's unnecessarily complicated. You get the idea. Let's try not to be cheap with the scares.
  • Artistic merit is again preferable, but not absolutely necessary.

I realise I'm setting the bar quite high, but let's not forget we're looking for classics here. It's good to have standards. So we know the kind of thing we're looking for, here's a few examples of what I would consider a classic scary movie:

The Shining

Possibly the greatest horror movie of all time. Artistically amazing, as Kubrick always was. Some jumps, general feeling of unease, gradual creeping terror, leaves food for thought.

Don't Look Now
Undeniably great film, regardless of horror status. Again quite thought provoking, suspenseful, shocking conclusion.

The Haunting (original)
Smart, great story, creates it's own mythology, tension galore, smart scares, fantastic atmosphere.

Ringu
Plays on classic urban-legend style mythology, creates uneasy tension throughout, one of the most spine-chilling reveals in movie history (typically botched in the hollywood remake).

There are several others I'd consider top notch, including a few modern offerings which I reckon have good claim to being classics (or at least modern classics). For example: The Others (plays expertly to genre conventions), Scream (completely fucks with genre conventions) and most recently The Orphanage, which contains one or two scenes that embody exactly what the classic horror movie should be all about.

Ok, so that's the general idea. My plan is to work my way through as many 'classics' as I can and hopefully find at least a few that genuinely deserve that title. If anyone can recommend anything that they reckon deserves to be watched please let me know. Hopefully at the end of this quest we'll be able to crown a few more legends of the genre.

To start, I've made a list of flicks I haven't seen which are reputed to be classics. They'll be watched and judged with the results being reported here. It seems that every list of 'greatest scary movies ever' online comprises the same handful of movies: Psycho, Alien, The Exorcist, The Omen... etc. So it may be hard to track down what we're looking for- classics that remain generally 'unseen' (I realise there may be some on the following list which I really should have seen already, but you'll have to bear with me on that).

Anyway, here's a list of preliminary research targets:

Hour of the Wolf
I've never seen anything be Ingmar Bergman, but he's reputed to be one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, so a horror movie by him must be good...

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari
1920's silent film regarded as one of the first horror movies.

Picnic at Hanging Rock
Not quite a horror, but apparently quite creepy.

Repulsion
Early Roman Polanski.

Village of the Damned
Never seen this. Creepy kids are generally effective. The main kid is Martin Stephens of The Innocents fame- that should probably be on the list of established classics...

Jacob's Ladder
Saw this years ago based on it's reputation as a classic scary movie, but was probably too young to appreciate it.

Night of the Demon
As above

Session 9
Modern flick which I would have assumed to be a straight-to-video crapfest, but has a lot of support online as something that's genuinely good.

As I said, there's probably many others out there which I'm not aware of, so do help.

What movie scared the crap out of you most? There's bound to be one...

To get us all in the mood here's an Irish short film which was recommended to me as a smart little taste of suspense and what to do with it. Remember that scary movies should always be viewed late at night and, of course, in the dark.

El Ten Eleven

El Ten Eleven is a two-man post-rock band known for combining guitar/bass doubleneck, with heavy effects pedaling, over acoustic or electric drumming.
They formed in 2003 after bassist and composer Kristian Dunn and drummer Tim Fogarty had played experimental music together in an organic/electronic four-piece group.
Stylistically, they have been described as atmospheric, putting a much more ethereal spin on the southwestern post-rock/Americana movement than bands like Calexico or The Court & Spark, though less electronic and more organic-sounding than Tortoise or most shoegazer bands. Comparisons have also been drawn to Sigur Rós and The Mercury Program. But this was all before there third album, "These Promises Are Being Videotaped" where they change sound entirely with a shift to electro-dance.
check out their new sound below and in the read more check out two music video from the previous albums (Im a fan of their new and old stuff)

Alan Moore On Watchmen: The Movie

The genius speaks.

Click above to check out an interesting LA Times interview with the man behind Watchmen. Undoubtadly Moore has good reason to be vengeful towards hollywood, but as Dave Gibbons (artist behind Watchmen) has pointed out, he has no problem taking the money. So his very vocal naysaying of the Watchmen movie comes across as somewhat redundant.

Unfortunately he appears as something of a grumpy old man. I'll be the first to agree that the man's work has been raped, but that's not to say that it's impossible for someone to finally deliver a satisfying adaptation. Zack Snyder may or may not be the man to do so, but I think I speak for everyone out there in fanboy-land that if he did and it was... then that would rock. A lot.

JUSTICE LIVE AT THE AMBASSADOR

No idea how this one slipped by unnoticed, but regardless: possibly the greatest dance band in the world today, Justice, are playing the Ambassador theater on October 26th. Tickets are 28 euros a pop.

Why are they playing a venue so small? Why was the gig not subject to mass publicity? Why despite the fact that they went on sale at 9am today are they still not sold out?

Who cares? Click here to head over to the purchase page, and be happy.

UPDATE:
There seems to be some ambiguity over whether this is a live show or a DJ set. Ticketmaster has it billed as 'Justice live', while on last.fm it's down as a DJ set. That said, being essentially DJs, what's the difference going to be? At their Oxegen slot this summer the lads seemed to be DJing, but that certainly took nothing away from the show. Either way, here's the poster for the tour, which is to promote the release of their first DVD, A Cross The Universe:

David O'Doherty picks the egoeccentric hangover mixtape vol. 35

This weekend our hangover mix comes courtesy of stand-up comedian, author, musician, playwright and recent winner of the 2008 If.comedy award David O'Doherty (or DOD for short). In the readmore see David's picks and a few words on each from the man himself.

1. Winston Churchill’s address to the Nation on the RAF.

Holy shit this is a good start. I never had time for speeches before this. I got it on some Greatest Speeches of the 21st Century compilation. It makes you want to join the army in 1942 and beat the shit out of Hitler. (This will be the theme of this compilation. “Don’t just lie in bed feeling sorry for yourself.! Get up! Cycle to the canal! At least feel sorry for yourself close to ducks!”)

2. Herman Dune: I Wish That I Could See You Soon.

If there is a happier song than this I can’t think of it.

3. Wilson Philips: Hold On For One More Day

One of those songs I got into as an ironic thing but now have listened to a lot. Maybe I’m wrong about this, but I think I really like the accapella bit.

4. Jape: Phil Lynott

“Look at the fucking moon” is my favourite lyric of the year.

5. Loney, Dear: And I Won’t Cause Anything At All

There are some things I will never understand. Like why Loney Dear isn’t fucking huge and people don’t sing his songs on X Factor.

6. Super Furry Animals: Slow Life

If I was ever pulled over by the law while I was listening to this song I would have to remain in the car until this song was over.

7. Phil Oakey: Together in Electric Dreams

In the Pappy’s Fun Club show at the Edinburgh Fringe this year this song played whenever anyone died. Also the video is off the bonerfied hook.

8. Jonathan Richman: I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar

If you don’t like this song I can never get off with you.

9. Len: Steal My Sunshine

I’ve no idea how this happened. Well I do, it’s the break from the disco song More, More, More with (and I think it is appropriate to say this) douchebags badly singing over the top. But somehow it’s not shit! It’s totally amazing!

10. Hard n’ Phirm: Funkhauser

This is the greatest comedy song ever recorded.

TV On The Radio For Tripod

This is the gig news I've been waiting months to hear: TV On The Radio are set to play Tripod on November 15th as part of the Heineken Green Synergy festival. I'll admit I was getting a tad nervous as the band announced UK tour dates on Monday, an announcement which would usually go hand in hand with that of any Irish dates, and I was very close to Ryanairing it over for a London or Manchester show. So now there's no need, woo hoo! My wallet can breathe a sigh of relief.

The band's new album Dear Science is currently living in my stereo with no sign of it moving. With my heaping of seriously high expectations on the record, it's somewhat surprising that it has lived up to all of them. Alt-pop at its best, Dear Science is probably TVOTR's best album to date, which is really saying something.

Björk.com had this to say

Björk and Antony performed against green screen in New York then each director was sent the raw footage to edit and create their piece. Christoph Jantos (Berlin) Masahiro Mogari (Tokyo) and Marçal Cuberta Junca (Girona) are the chosen directors. Each director was given their own section of the film, to develop how they wished - on completion the 3 films were edited together in London to make the final music video.

When Music Meets Fashion

Fashion labels seems to have developed quite a knack of convincing decent musical acts to soundtrack their shows, the latest artists recruited being Antony and the Johnsons. The New York band have written a new track entitled Falling Shadows for Prada's fashion week, which can be checked out below:

If that's the mellow side of fashion, Dior Homme have gone the other way by commissioning Justice to soundtrack their Autumn-Winter 09 show. In typical fashion, the Justice lads delivered a storming epic with beats meeting screaming guitars. Entitled Planisphere, the track runs at nearly eighteen minutes, and here it is in it's entirety courtesy of Ohh! Crapp:

This is a review of an album called "This is the album of a band called Adebisi Shank" by a band called Adebisi Shank

So its been a little over a year and a bit since Adebisi Shank released "this is the E.P of a band called Adebisi Shank", since then they toured the E.P extensively through out Ireland, Mick and Lar released an E.P with Terrordactyl , Vin released Rocky IV Reckyrd in his guise as The Vinny Club, ventured into UK and mainland Europe with label mates Marvins Revolt, done a tour of Japan with Lite (who themselves are on tour in Ireland in October) and gained a very enthusiastic American fan.

Adebisi Shank - You Me
(continued in the read more)

The album was produced by J. Robbins (Government Issue, Scream, Jawbox, Burning Airlines and Channels) in Magpie Cage studios in Baltimore, Maryland, the LP was mastered by TJ Lipple (Guitarist with Aloha) at Inner Ear studios in Washington DC.
First off i just want to say the album is addictive , clocking in at just over 23 minutes its goes by in what seems like half that time and with you hitting repeat to hear it again. the album doesn't have the visceral punch that the E.P. had, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing the album is a more cerebral beast then the E.P. with many of the tracks seemly flowing from one to the other, production wise every note is crisp and sharp and i cant find fault with it at all. Musically it's as terrifying as the E.P. Coming from all directions with unrelenting amazingness from all in the band. Again Adebisi Shank have made another record that defies a decent description and classification , its is a must have and they are a must see band.

Good Friday In Modern Ireland

Yesterday Judge Mary Fahy of Galway District Court found herself presiding over some interesting charges brought against nine Galway City restaurants.

The nine restaurants were found to have on Good Friday last offered patrons wine with their meals. As booze drinkers countrywide will well know, this kind of carry-on does not jive well with the law of the land. Sure, what would Holy Jeebus say if he heard of such a thing? "You should have stocked up with a few cans from the offie last night", no doubt.

Though well aware of the rules in this regard, Judge Fahy decided to cut the crap and say what all the rest of us were thinking. Branding the prosecutions 'ridiculous' in today's world, she declared that, while the Gardaí were technically right in bringing the cases before the court "I myself think it's absolutely ludicrous that people on holidays especially cannot have a glass of wine with their meal".

Three cheers for common sense!

I'd like to advocate further progress along these lines and call for Off Licenses to be allowed open on Good Friday... but with their already losing a substantial amount of business with the latest licensing laws I'd hate to deprive them of the windfall that always comes with panicked booze purchases on Holy Thursday.

Bloc Party Do It Again

It seems that Bloc Party just can't stop messing with 'the way things are done'. Having rocked the industry boat with the release of Intimacy two weeks ago, the band further shook things up yesterday by announcing the release of their new single.

Talons
is to released through Wichita on October 20th, and is streaming online now on BlocParty.com. While recorded with the rest of Intimacy, the song does not feature on the album, presumably just because the band like fucking with people. Kudos.

The song is somewhere in between the new, experimental Bloc Party, and the old guitar anthem Bloc Party. Personally, I'm too happy with the new direction to think that meandering from one to the other is a good thing (give me Mercury over Talons any day), but nonetheless it's still a solid track.

Check it out for yourself:

Elbow Win Mercury Music Prize

So the winner of the Mercury Music Prize has been announced and, as is common with this one, it comes after months of uncertainty.

Of all the awards this is one thats never easy to pick, but in this case it's a deserving winner as "The Seldom Seen Kid" is a great album and proof that this band are far more deserving than the underdog status they've had bestowed on them throughout this decade.

Below is them picking up the award and in the read more is some vids, including Guy Garvey dedicating the Mercury win to us right here at egoeccentric (well.. not quite, but close enough).

Nine Inch Nails/Queens of the Stone Age NOT playing Whelans

Contrary to what our Rob heard on Newstalk last night, the undisputed dream gig of the year is not taking place on the 1st October in Dublin's premiere Indie music venue.

Now no official denial from either NIN or QOTSA is present nor is it likely to be as it seems what Newstalk heard was the less exciting (although still intriguing) announcement that Jubilee will be playing in said venue at said date. The reason for the confusion is that Jubilee is made up of the session players (the ones who aren't Trent Reznor and Josh Hommes) from NIN, QOTSA and The Icarus Line.

The press release describes their sounds as sounding like "The Replacements, The Stone Roses, Neil Young, Blur, Jane's Addiction, Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and The Verve" which seems like a very interesting proposition although not quite the Industrial stoner rock combo you might expect from a Nine Inch Nails/Queens of the Stone Age collision but doubtless they'll be interesting to check out.

Then again it could also be a mighty ruse and Trent and Josh will show however they'll both have to rush pretty hard afterwards as NIN play in Buenos Aires the next day and QOTSA play in California two days later. Cheers Newstalk for having me woken in the middle of the night with frantic phone calls from fellow bloggers. Lucky I heard about Jubilee playing or I would have been up half the night trying to find out the story.

More TVOTR, More Greatness

The countdown to TV On The Radio's Dear Science continues, and as more tracks hit the net nothing is done to dispel the notion that this could well be the album of the year.

All signs suggest that TVOTR have delivered a much more focused album, while maintaining the blissfully orchestrated chaos of it's predecessors. Funk, Pop, Jazz, Hip Hop, Electronica, Rock... it's all here, and it's all great.

Here's a taster- the album is released on September 23rd- expect a full review soon...

TV On The Radio- DLZ

And while we're at it, here's a rather interesting mashup by ToTom. It's the kind of thing that has the potential to be disastrous, but somehow comes off quite well (it does, trust me).

Kraftwerk & Co Moved

Damn these Irish Summers, they show no mercy. Electric Picnic was lucky to escape unscathed from our crappy weather, but the A Day In The Life festival featuring Kraftwerk, Soulwax and others has not been so fortunate.

Set to take place in Wicklow's awesome Luggala Estate, excessive rainfall has made it impossible to prepare the venue in time, and the whole event has been moved to Kilmainham Hospital.

What does this mean? Well, seeing as ticket prices included the fare for a 'magic bus' to bring punters to Luggala, anyone attending will now have €20 refunded on the day of the show. Those who simply decide not to go at all can get a full refund from the usual places.

As for what parts of the show will be affeceted by the change of venue, we don't quite know. The original plan of having the performances in a "specially constructed tent structure" is still on the cards, but it's hard to see how the Body & Soul Area (which would have been a major selling point of the original concept) will still go ahead, at least in a manner akin to what Electric Picnicers know and love.

On a positive note, Vaudeville Circus troupe Lucent Dossier have been added to the lineup following the great success of their recent Picnic appearances. This may prove to be interesting, as I have heard nothing but great things said of these guys. Check out footage of them in the readmore.

Lucent Dossier Promo:

POD press release:

POD Concerts announce change of venue for A DAY IN THE LIFE with Kraftwerk due to adverse weather conditions.

Pod Concerts regret to announce that due to extreme weather conditions causing the river at Lough Dan to burst its banks on the Luggala Estate, Co. Wicklow today, the Kraftwerk concert, scheduled for the 13th September will now be held in the grounds of Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin.

With adverse weather conditions forecasted for the forthcoming week making production and build of site impossible, Promoter John Reynolds declared;

"I am personally deeply disappointed that this event can not take place on the Luggala Estate which is one of the most awe inspiring and breathtaking locations in Ireland. However due to the unprecedented rainfall and the nature of the site being a natural valley, the subsequent water logging conditions, have made it impossible to prepare Luggala for a concert for the general public."

Tickets for this event, which will see Godfathers of Electronic Music Kraftwerk performing an incredibly special two hour long set, will still be valid for Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin on 13th September, a unique and historical city centre venue, which played host to the hugely successful Leonard Cohen, Iggy Pop and Morrissey concerts earlier this year. Because of the nature of this site, it considerable less vulnerable to flooding and such adverse weather conditions. The ticket price for A DAY IN THE LIFE included a bus transfer to and from Luggala estate, Co. Wicklow, concert holders will now be refunded the bus fare of €20 on presentation of their ticket on the day of the show. Alternatively a full refund is available to ticket holders from their original point of purchase, for those who do not wish to attend Kraftwerk at Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

Though the venue has changed A DAY IN THE LIFE will remain at intimate capacity of 4,999 in a specially installed tented structure. Door times will remain the same opening at 3pm.

Pod Concerts would like to take this opportunity to announce a new introduction to the line up for A DAY IN THE LIFE. Hailing from Los Angeles, Lucent Dossier are the internationally acclaimed theatre collective that wowed Electric Picnickers last weekend with their apocalyptic steamboat providing a unique glimpse into the avant garde tribal culture that has captured the curiosity of the world. Lucent Dossier will be performing twice during A DAY IN THE LIFE in a spectacular purpose built dome.

toto - africa version jape

here's what Richie from jape had to say about the cover:

"i got locked into my house yesterday and couldn't get out until this morning so i decided to record a version of africa by toto..

in my head i was thinking dj falcon meets ariel pink.. it's not too bad.. i have listened to it about 1,500 times since yesterday.. going slightly mad, i was hallucinating last night that the colours on the computer screen were exactly the same as the colours on an amstrad 464 monitor, which is the computer i would have had when this song was out probably.. so it could have been some random time slip or something.. Electric Picnic '08 Review

Fun and frolics abound at the latest Electric Picnic which, despite having several worthy acts poached by the cunt of all festivals that took place back in July, still mustered together enough madness to make it easily Irelands music festival of choice.

Click on the read more for my blow by blow account of what the hell I got up to during the day and most importantly who I saw and even more importantly if they were any good.

Friday

Before I embark on this dredge into my memories I'm going to give a spoiler: I saw no bad acts at Electric Picnic. Some were lacklustre but nobody truly sucked which was a bit of a revelation as usually at each festival there's one or two acts who will truly piss me off. A bit like MGMT did at the aforementiond cuntfest.

Having arrived in the early afternoon it was considered pretty good going that I actually managed to get all the way from the back of the Andy Warhol campsite in time to see Jape. Did anybody else notice how fucking annoying it was that they gave the campsites names this year instead of colours. How many times did you hear "What campsite are you in?" "Jimi Hendrix" "Which one is that?". Whats wrong with just simple red, blue and yellow. Causes far too much confusion.

Anyway. Jape. Well if you don't already know that the man has one of the best albums of the year and a class live act then you shouldn't be reading this cause he does on both counts. I found it strangely ironic that the Crawdaddy tent is about ten times bigger than Crawdaddy itself but Jape managed to pack the fucker out and entertain the masses who all sang along in their droves to "Floating" and "I was a man" amongst others.

While stopping to have a mong break after Jape one couldn't help but take in a little bit of yet another reformed Irish act this time in the shape of The Stunning. Not having been old enough back in the early 90's to have appreciated these lads most of the songs were fairly lost on me but its telling how much of a fickle bunch modern audiences are that during their last song ("Brewing up a Storm" naturaly) everybody starts running towards the tent in order to cath a blast of the only Stunning song that they (and I) know. It does happen to be a good one though if a bit of a rip off of "Don't fear the Reaper".

Wander over to Goldfrapp to catch a few minutes. She's good at what she does but she's never exactly blown my skirt up and she seems to be dipping into her folky shit instead of the dancy stuff that everybody likes. Ho hum.

My mate Jono from England turns up out of nowhere. "What are you doing here man?" I say. "All I have to do is inflate the inflatable church at the start and deflate it at the end. Free flight grub and ticket". Bastard. He did however draw my attention to Beardyman playing in the Bacardi live tent. Human beatbox kind of character. Very very impressive sounds coming out of his gob. Doing cover versions of songs while playing all the instuments with his vocals at the same time. Fucking man had some time so spare growing up no doubt.

Wander over for a bit of Digitalism. Good sounds. Pity I wasn't so fucked or I would have stayed longer. Reminded myself to get the album and note next time they're playing.

First must see of the weekend: Sigur Ros. Nothing will make me forgive myself for walking out of them two years ago at cuntfest and go to see Humanzi instead just on the basis of being too hyper for whale music. This will rectify everything hopefully so set up my chair and sit and let the beauty wash over me. I'm not going to say that Sigur Ros get better and better with each album as they're last two haven't been as good as "()" or "Agaetis Byrjun" (they're still great though) but they've got enough quality to fill as sets worth and I pray nonetheless that "Untitled #8" will finish the set which, thank fucking christ, it does. If ever there was a song you'd want playing as the world blew up around you then that would be it. The rest of the night is left hoping just that will happen.

Saturday

Saturday begins mid afternoon with a trip to the Electric Arena where Midnight Juggernauts are halfway through the set. Not being familiar with their work I head on advice and am impressed with their electro rocky sounds. Will be seeing if the album measures up so wait with bated breath guys lest I piss on thee from afar.

The Breeders begin and within two songs have bored the shite out of me so I head over to the Little Big Tent to wait for The Faint. Having been listening to these dudes for about 6 years tensions are rising with their first trip to these shores. Unfortunately this didn't turn out to be the barnstormer that we all had hoped as they appear 25 minutes late only to play for 20 minutes and then bugger off. They cite technical difficulties but we love The Faint so in fairness they could have come out and read the fucking phone book and we would have been happy. Next time though please come and play your own gig and really blow our cockheads off.

A bit of a tent break to prepare ourselves for what is certainly going to be the maddest hour of the weekend as Warlords of Pez follow three sexy nurses toting free vodka shots onto the stage and swing their mighty cocks and balls into our gleeful mugs. I've had to wait long enough to see these mad cunts so I'm going to be a selfish bastard and not tell you what went in just so you can drag your carcasses down to where they will next rape and pillage and see them for yourself. Consider yourselves warned. And shat upon.

Little bit sad I missed Grace Jones but what can one do. Head to the Electric Arena for Underworld? Sure why not. Good sounds. Tent too packed? Too stoned? That would be a yes. Lie on the grass and mong out? Yes please. Underworld prove that they can still pump out a quality crowd-pleaser but unlike The Chemical Brothers who seem to evolve as dance evolves they seem to be still stuck in their mid to late 90's phase. Woody Allen's analogy about the shark moving forward springs to mind but regardless they know how to pack a tent out.

Wander past George Clinton. Not feeling it. Good funky sounds but elsewhere needs attention.

Sunday

On what is normally my festival day for lying around feeling like the population of Morocco just shat in my head I find myself strangely chipper in the morning and what is more, am able to head down to catch my earliest festival slot in 6 years. Despite playing at the ungodly hour of 12.30 Ham Sandwich have managed to almost fill the Crawdaddy tent. A mighty achievement and proof still that this band are rising and rising. Their songs sound great on the large stage and Niamh Farrel shows she has recovered well enough from popping a sprog. The main focus as usual is on Podge and what he's wearing, in this case a bunny suit, and god did I ever envy the stage dive he does halfway back the tent as the band walk off. Top stuff altogether.

Walking back to get some breccie we're treated to the Dublin Gospel Choir on the main stage running through a version of Sigur Ros' "Hoppipolla". Fucking bizarre and how they learnt the words is beyond me.

Back in time to see my surprise hit of the festival. Pivot have brought out one of the best albums this year and its clear from their live show that we're going to hear lots and lots from them before the year is out. Check em out in October when they come back over here. Like a mixture between Battles and God is an Astronaut which you have to admit sounds pretty good.

These New Puritans disappointed however. I like their album a lot and really dig the song "Elvis" but they just don't seem to give much of a bollocks onstage and all look so drippy that I'm worried the next fart somebody lets will knock them over. Shame really. They're not bad per se, just lacking a certain something. Its not Je ne sais quoi but I don't know what it is. Har.

Stick around long enough to see the start of Faust. About ten years ago in my more impressionable days I had the idea of bringing Chainsaws and Black and Deckers on stage and using them as musical instruments. Don't really know or care how they sounded cause the start of if was the lowest in wanky shite and I bailed having no desire to hear the sounds of a cement mixer mixing cement. Tosh.

Sunday being sunday I usually see less bands than usual, but seeing as I saw a huge number the previous days, the fact I saw 4 bands is fucking epic. My Bloody Valentine are the other must-see band of the weekend and boy oh boy do those chaps (and chapettes) know how to make some fucking noise. Its only listening to them now do you realise just how inspirational they've been on music thats out nowadays and as you stand and try to listen to they're 15 minute wall of noise that ends their set you wonder how in the name of God you can stand it. Rumours abound of some pussies falling out of the tent crying and throwing up. These people should not be allowed at music festivals and in fact should not be allowed to live. Smashing stuff.

Wander to body and soul past Sex Pistols. Manage to catch "Problems", "God Save the Queen" and "EMI". Hear Lydon hurling abuse at some angsty prick in the crowd. Doesn't he know who he is. No respect at all. Even if he is a racist bollocks surely thats the point of the Pistols isn't it?

Roll on next year by god.

Cheers to James Goulden and Eddie Ryan at State for the live photo's
